I was reading some articles on the National Candle Association website and I read something very interesting that I thought I would share with you today. The question was, “Is there such a thing as too much fragrance in a candle”? Most people think that the more fragrance a candle has the better the candle. But, the answer is yes, a candle can have too much fragrance. For every candle formulation, there is a maximum amount of fragrance that can be added to a candle. If too much is added, the candle will not burn properly. Too much fragrance or fragrances not approved for candle use can lead to improper burn performance or excess sooting. How do you choose a Indoor Bonsai
There are two types of indoor bonsai—tropical and semi-tropical. Tropical plants need to have a constant temperature. Temperatures shouldn’t fall below 60 F and fluctuate more than 10 degrees between night and day. Semi-tropical bonsai want a distinct two-season year. A nice warm, bright growing period, April through October, followed by a bright cooler period November through March. Another consideration is whether you want to have a flowering plant or one that you grow for its leaves. The choice of plant type and shape is highly personal. In the easy care category is the Ficus and the Hawaiian Umbrella tree. Each bonsai has its own character and appeal. There are hundreds of varieties to choose from including the red or pink Anthurium.

Like the bonsai look but you are worried about the care indoors? First, choose one of the many varieties of plants that do well as an Indoor Bonsai. The woody-stemmed plants such as ficus, aralias, azalea, Norfolk pine, serissa, gardenia, boxwood or even a Hawaiian Umbrella. These bonsai are also receptive to their limbs being wired to direct the growth. Tropical and subtropical varieties can not tolerate temperatures below 40 - 50 degrees F so in most areas of the country they need to be raised indoors. These plants can be left outside when the temperatures stay above this. Place the bonsai inside the house where there is filtered sunlight from an east, south, or west window. You may also choose to use grow lights 12 hours per day for a more consistent light supply. When the Indoor Bonsai is placed outside in summer, it is best to place it in partial sun.
In addition to light the essentials for raising any bonsai is consistent watering and fertilizing a couple times a month. Time release fertilizers can also be used to make to chore easier..
Choose a bonsai to your liking, and then give it proper light. Feed and water it and you will be pleased with this great addition to your home’s decor.

Hello from Out West Switchplates! Today we thought we’d talk a bit about the creation of our switchplates. First Tony hammers sheets of steel until he is pleased with the texture of the metal. At this point the sheets become somewhat warped so they must then be pressed flat prior to cutting. Then they are precision cut into the various switchplate shapes after which, piece-by-piece, they are individually pressed into dies. This provides the nice rounded edges that allow them to sit nicely over your electrical outlets. At this point we are also checking for imperfections in the nearly completed product. The application of a powder coat finish completes the final stage of the process. Ta-da!! Fabulous, metal, artisan switchplates are ready for shipping! So now you know a bit about how our product is created and that it is not mass-produced somewhere overseas. I always like something that I can make use of in several different ways. Western style metal key racks are one of those items.

The black olive bonsai tree is a wondeful Indoor Bonsai. We train it to produce olives at a very low height making this amazing bonsai. In nature, the black olive is generally windswept, which makes this an excellent choice for bonsai style. I was doing some research on the types of wax used by candle makers over the years and I came upon some interesting facts on the National Candle Association website. Early Egyptian and Roman civilizations used tallow from animals to make candle wax. There is an interesting anonymous quote on their website from someone who lived in the 18th Century, “A tallow candle to be good must be half sheep’s tallow and half cow’s; that of hoggs mekes ‘em gutter, give an ill smell and a thick black smoak.” I laughed when I read that quote and thought you would enjoy it also. Candles must have smelled just awful back then considering what they were made of. Can you image the fragrance you would get burning a candle made from the parts of animals? I can’t. The Chinese used beeswax as early as 618 AD to make their candles and it is still used today. At Scented Candles By Cathy, we use a highly refined paraffin wax blended with beeswax when we make our candles so they burn longer and have a stronger aroma. A few simple suggestions for pruning and shaping your bonsai.
How often you trim will depend on how fast your tree grows. You trim the foliage when it starts to look out of shape. The key is to never cut too much for many times this could weaken the tree, but at the same time cut enough to keep it well-shaped. The sucker growth, which usually appears at the base of the trunk and in the ‘elbows’ of the tree most times is removed, unless you have a particular design for a branch or trunk in that area. Leave major pruning for when the bonsai is at its strongest in the late spring to early summer.

The wooden rocking horse is a traditional children’s toy that dates back to the 1800’s. Over the years rocking horses have stimulated many a child’s imagination and provided hours of enjoyment. Outdoor bonsai trees will have more chance to flourish when it is not kept exclusively indoors. When grown or placed outdoors, they need to be protected from freezing, depending on the variety. Proper watering is probably the most important aspect a bonsai’s success. For example, with outdoor bonsai, top soil might appear dry while just below the surface it may still be moist. When you first receive your Outdoor Bonsai Tree it will go through different stages so allow your tree to become acclimated to its new environment for several weeks before making any major changes. At first, the tree’s leaves could become yellow and fall off but this is just temporary and it is nothing to fear.
After the tree is planted, you can check the water level by poking your finger down in the soil about an inch or better yet use a moisture meter. If the soil is dry, water thoroughly so the water flows out from under the container. Typically, the water level would only need to be measured every two weeks during the winter months. As the warmer summer months approach, the frequency of watering your bonsai will likely increase. Just remember that for your Outdoor Bonsai tree to survive during its dormant period in the winter months, you should water it less frequently and you should only water when temperatures are 45 degrees or above. Watering it in temperatures below 45 degrees could damage or kill the bonsai. Be sure to use a good Bonsai Book for specific information for the care of your Outdoor Bonsai Tree.

Are you a lover of or do you know someone who loves the old California pottery or Relpo pottery, things like McCoy and Shawnee but not as expensive. I have the cutest Raggedy Ann Relpo planter in my online store that you should see. It would look so cute in a baby’s room or where there are bright colors in a room as she is red and orange and blue.
