Pregnancy Fears and Facts
Although you may be happy and excited about the upcoming birth of your baby, it is normal and natural to have some worries. Your hormones are going crazy and your body is changing. Every pregnancy is a little bit different. Here are some facts from experienced doctors to help ease the fear.
The fear of the fetus not getting enough nutrition to develop due to Mom’s morning sickness is common. However, Dr. Karyn Morse, MD, an ob-gyn, says “They’ll absorb all of the nutrition from the food you do give them….” Dr. Diane Ashton, MD, MPH, deputy medical director of the March of Dimes, says, “…morning sickness isn’t going to cause any nutritional imbalance or affect the fetus” To reduce morning sickness, eat small, frequent meals to not overwhelm the digestive system or to get to the point of being ravanously hungry.
The fear of a miscarriage is also on many pregnant women’s minds. Dr. Morse says that less than 20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. After the 6-8 week period the risk drops to around 5%. If you have had a miscarriage before, the chances of having a second one is less than 3%. Dr. Ashton says that the cause of a miscarriage is usually a chromosomal abnormality that prevents the fetus from developing normally. It is not because of anything you did or didn’t do. You can lower your risk of a miscarriage by not smoking, consuming alcohol and limit caffeine to about 200 mg. (one large coffee) per day.
Taking this advice and also taking prenatal vitamins with folic acid for one year prior to pregnancy and during gestation can also lower your risk for birth defects and going into early labor.
The last two concerns we’ll discuss are being stressed out and losing the “baby fat” after delivery. During pregnancy many women feel more stressed due to changing hormones, difficulty sleeping, weight gain, and similar difficulties. Most research shows intermittent stress has minimal affect on the baby. More important than the stress itself is how you handle the stress. You need to calm yourself in whatever healthy way you like, i.e. venting to someone close, journaling, exercise, or meditation.
Losing “baby fat” is best handled by staying within the weight gain guidelines (generally 25-35 pounds for medium weight, healthy woman). Breastfeeding your baby will also help drop those pounds by increasing your metabolism. (To say nothing of the benefit to your child.) When your doctor says it is ok, you can start exercising.
Swimming is a great aerobic exercise before and after delivery to deal with stress or to lose the “baby fat”. It can help you stay in shape and lose the extra weight. Some degree of back pain during pregnancy is common to most women. The causes of the discomfort are varied. Some may experience back pain from the onset of pregnancy due to changes in hormones allow pelvic area ligaments to soften which may effect the support you usually have for your back.
