  1. There are many occasions when using a drum kit to make music isn’t the best way to include percussion. Drum kits are bulky, not always the right size to fit into the allotted space, and often difficult to maneuver. Also, many venues are just not large enough to benefit from the intense sound that comes out of a kit.

If you are faced with this issue, consider including a variety of African and Native American drums in your instrument bag of tricks. Djembes and frame drums come in many sizes and produce a range of sounds from whispering to yelling out loud. Other African drums, like ashikos and djun djuns carry a big bass rhythm to give your percussion a nice full bottom without making your ears bleed.

There are other percussion instruments that give a lot of texture to the music you play. Rattles and shakers, as well as chimes and bells do a great job of adding diversity. An udu is a hollow ceramic hand percussion instrument that has a hole in the side and on the top. Originally used to carry water, It produces a kind of resonant thump when you play it.

At Djembe Drums Online we offer a wide variety of high quality African and Native American drums that are made by craftsmen who have many years of experience. Frame and pow wow drums are made in the Pacific Northwest by artisans who take great care to produce beautiful and lasting drums. Our African drums are all made from sustainably forested mahogany that is certified to be legally harvested. Each section of mahogany is carefully selected and carved to produce the most perfect resonance and long lasting performance. You will be sure to find the perfect drum to add to your collection of hand percussion instruments at http://www.djembedrumsonline.com

  2. Acoustic Guitar? “Are you serious? How in the world can I start making $25, $50, or more per hour with an acoustic guitar–in just a few weeks? And I can do this even if I don’t play guitar??”

“The answer is YES! I play live acoustic guitar music almost every week of the year, making good, regular money—and I’m going to show you exactly how you can do it, too–even if you don’t play guitar and can’t even sing!”

Hi, I’m Rex Murphy, acoustic guitar player, entertainer. So many people dream of having a job in music. It’s their passion, something they would even do for free. But in many cases, a good job in music, IF you can find it, doesn’t pay very much. So, they get some other job to survive, pay bills, etc, and end up worn out, with little energy or time left for the music!

So what is the answer? How can someone make good money playing music, with very little equipment, minimal skills, and be in total control? One of the best answers I’ve found is: live acoustic guitar music!

Many people don’t realize that acoustic guitar music or the ‘unplugged’ type of entertainment is truly one of the FASTEST way for almost any musician to get some money flowing, and that there is a TREND happening right now that is leaning toward this type of entertainment! Why? Because it WORKS–it’s low cost for the bar / restaurants, wedding planners, etc, and…Read More: http://www.acousticguitarmoney.com

  3. Well, you’ve decided that you want to buy an African drum, You love going to drum circles, and your friends have shared all their percussion instruments with you. But you want a drum for yourself. You want to show up at the next drum circle with your very own African drum, so choosing your perfect drum becomes the next step. You’ve played djembes, and maybe even an ashiko, which is like the big boy version. Maybe you’ve heard of ngomas, udus, doumbeks and bougarabous, and wonder what the differences are between them.

They do have a lot in common. For instance, all are percussion instruments that produce sounds when struck by the hand or fingers. Traditional djembes are made of hollowed-out wood, often mahogany, as are ngomas and bougarabous. But udus are ceramic, and were originally used as water carrying vessels, and doumbeks can be made of an assortment of materials - wood, metals or ceramics.

Djembes, bougarabous, and doumbeks are goblet shaped, while ashikos, ngomas and djun djuns are generally taller and have straight or angled sides. Their deep tones are a great compliment to the smaller hand percussion drums.

Most african drums are hand-carved by master artisans who have a long history of making beautiful instruments. You can find drums that are made from legally and sustainably harvested mahogany forests. These drums are certified by the country of origin to follow all its laws regarding sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Djembe Drums Online offers the best prices on African drums, made of certified mahogany wood. These drums are hand-carved by master craftsmen and painted by experienced artists to create the most beautiful drums available. You will be delighted with your drum and the ability to participate in one of the most popular pastimes sweeping the country today.

  4. Winter has arrived and although there are many wonderful activities to do out in the snow and cold weather, it isn’t always the best idea. Blizzardy days, bitter cold days, or just plain too-tired-to-go-through-all-the-hassle days can leave us with winter doldrums. Finding ways to perk things up and get people excited presents some challenges, but it can be done.

Why not do something new and exciting? Why not host your own pot luck and drum circle? It’s very easy to do and a lot of fun for everyone. You need to gather up all the folks you know who like to drum or who have drums and other percussion instruments. Choose an evening and figure out where everyone can sit.

The potluck part is easy; everyone knows how to get that going. As to the drums and drum circle, it is very flexible and adaptable to any kind of setting. There are lots of different kinds of African drums as well as Native American ceremonial drums. Djembes are perhaps the most popular of the African hand drums, but there are also ashikos, doumbeks, udus, ngomas, bougarabous and djun djuns. Its also a good idea to have shakers and rattles and other kinds of small percussion instruments on hand for those who may not be as confident or who have played not played before.

After all have gathered and eaten their fill, its time to sit down and get drumming! Some people like to have a focus, such as drumming for the health of loved ones, or our country, or some event that has transpired. We always get together and have a pot luck and drum circle on the equinoxes and solstices. Everyone has a chance to contribute their thoughts and wishes for the coming months.

There is no set pattern for how the drum circle evolves. Once you get started you just establish a beat, while others contribute the rhythms of their choosing. Its amazing, but each “piece” seems to know exactly when to end. All of a sudden the drumming begins to slow down until there is only one beat, which fades out as everyone takes a long, peaceful breath. Then, the only thing left to do is decide on a date for the next drum circle.

You can find a beautiful assortment of Native American ceremonial drums as well as African hand drums at Djembe Drums Online. Please check us out and get ready to begin your own tradition of potlucks and drum circles!

  5. Are You A Struggling Songwriter? Want to Stop Struggling and Make it?!

Wow. So many good songwriters struggling out there and so few that actually get their songs heard, played, and recorded by artists. I have actually heard a songwriter exclaim “My God-how many years does it take to get a hit!” If you’re an aspiring artist or songwriter looking to write a hit song and finally make some good money, read on—I’ve got some good news for you!

A friend of mine, Morgan Cryar, who lives and works in Nashville, TN, has written several #1 hits, even more in the top 10, was in popular music videos in the 80’s, 90’s, has decided to share his secrets! Morgan started out with very little and soon after learning some key techniques, had a record deal with a major label and many other publishers, writers, and artists literally begging him for songs, ideas, tips.

What Morgan found out is that it’s fairly easy to write a ‘good’ song, but a ‘great’ song has key elements to it, certain ‘patterns’, simple changes that can be learned and put into practice immediately. In his e-book, he tells you exactly what to do, with examples, and then tells you how to get your music heard quickly, by the RIGHT people so you can stop struggling, and make it!

Morgan’s songwriting course Strong Songwriting even has a 100% Money Back Guarantee. I bought the book and my songwriting skills have skyrocketed! I am now writing with other top writers in the business, and getting excellent reviews of my songs. There’s even a free e-course just for checking out his webpage!

  6. If you are a drummer, you know how challenging it can be to cart around and set up a drum kit. Oftentimes, the space you’re going to is really crowded and cramped. If you’re up on a riser, its really hard to make sure that everything stays in its place and doesn’t fall off (I’ve seen it happen).

Having a selection of hand drums to use when there is not enough room, is one way to meet that challenge. Djembes and other African hand drums are portable and offer a great way to address this problem. There are so many percussion instruments, the choice is very wide. Djembes, ngomas, ashikos, udus, djun djuns, all work together to create fabulous rhythms and danceable beats. Drummers can be closer to the other instruments and be integrated more fully.

There is also the issue of sound level. Drum kits oftentimes are way too loud for complete appreciation of the lyrics they are accompanying. With hand drums, percussionists are more able to moderate the intensity of the sound to provide a gentler experience for the audience.

At Djembe Drums Online we offer a wide variety of African drums, made of legally harvested, environmentally sustainable mahogany wood. Each drum is carved from one piece of wood and certified at every step. You are sure to be delighted with any drum that you choose. Please take a look and see what we have to offer. Customer satisfaction is our primary goal.

  7. I’ve heard some people say that they don’t have any rhythm. They can’t get on beat, they clap at the wrong time, their feet don’t tap and they stopped caring anyway. What difference does it make if they never hear the beat? Well, I’m here to tell you that you do have rhythm, and you can hear the beat.

It starts with your heart. Everyone has a heart beat. If you lie down for a little while and place your hand on your heart, you’ll feel it… thump, thump, thump. If you pay attention, you’ll begin to notice that it beats in other places too, like your wrist, your neck, your ankle. You can pick up a djembe or other drum and tap along with your heart beat. Don’t make it loud, just a gentle tap, tap, tap. You’ll find that its very relaxing. The beat of your heart is the beat of the circle of life, of Mother Earth, of all the living creatures who inhabit her.

Djembe drums are a good way to practice feeling and hearing a beat. After you’ve gotten easy and sure of your heart’s rhythm, you can just start counting out your own, 1-2-3-4, tapping gently on your drum, then faster to a count of eight. Its alright to just play around by yourself, before you get brave enough to be part of a drum circle.

Djembe drums aren’t the only drums good for this purpose. You could try any number of other kinds of drums, african or native american drums. They have been around for a very long time because they are part of a heritage that interacts with the rhythms of life and Mother Earth as a part of everyday living.

Djembe Drums Online has a beautiful assortment of hand made drums that can help you discover your rhythm. Your heart will tell you which one is right for you.

  8. The Earth and all its inhabitants are inextricably intertwined, although in this modern time, it is sometimes difficult to see just how. Ancient and native peoples were in touch with the natural world and developed many rituals to celebrate or mark different times of the year or experiences they had. Since drums can be made out of almost anything, many rituals took place within and around drum circles, where drumming provided the backdrop for african, native american, or aboriginal dance and celebration. The beat is the heart of the occasion, and is brought forth into today’s world. Our rituals are many and varied, giving us endless ways to dance and celebrate to the beat of our collective drums. Determining what kinds of rituals you want to have in your life is a good topic for meditation.

Many Americans have chosen to find local drum circles to participate in, while others dance to the beat of their own drum at home. Drumming can be a family affair, where even the youngest can find a beat and be part of the larger celebration or even a somber occasion, should that be the case. Rituals around birthdays and other holidays are developed over time, and each experience is deepened by the previous ones.

Finding the drums for your personal or family rituals is easy at Djembe Drums Online. We have an outstanding selection of beautifully hand-crafted African and Native American drums. From the 4” mini djembe to the 48” Ashiko, to pow wow and frame drums, there are many choices that are just perfect for you.

  9. There is nothing quite like being part of a drum circle, drumming with your friends or at a party. The rhythms and beat get into your blood and the evening sails by. The sounds of percussion instruments are earthy and vibrant. The different varieties of african drums all contribute to a rich drumming experience. 10. X Factor, American Idol Finalists / Winners…What Secret Do They Have In Common?

Among other things, it’s usually live music experience. Not all contestants–I am referring to the finalists and winners. Almost all had live music experience before they entered the competition. Just a fluke? Not likely. That live music experience, playing in a band or as a solo act helped them do several things: 1) get comfortable with themselves and gave them confidence with their unique voice / style, 2) get comfortable in front of an audience and 3) helped them learn how to communicate effectively with the audience, which is a make or break skill that you must have to move on to the “big leagues”. Kevin Skinner who won America’s Got Talent a couple of years ago, Taylor Hicks, Kelly Clarkson, American Idol winners, etc–all played live music successfully before entering / winning these competitions. Look them up, read their biographies–you’ll see what I mean.

What’s my point here? My point is that if you desire to win one of these competitions, it’s a good idea to begin training yourself using live music, such as playing in a band or solo acoustic acts with an acoustic guitar, etc. There is an ebook “Acoustic Guitar Money” that teaches you not only how use live music to train yourself, but also how to make really good weekly money while you are training! And they have a money back guarantee. Read more here: http://www.acousticguitarmoney.com

  11. Family Fun

With all the emphasis on family values nowadays, you might think that most families somehow lack them. My experience with families is that generally they are looking for ways to have fun together doing activities at home. They value time together and they want to find ways to increase their bonding and sense of belonging. Their values include strengthening the ties they have to one another through activities that all can participate in. Parents want to put their families first, but often do not know of ways they can all enjoy an evening at home together, without resorting to TV and video games. Board games can be fun, but the range of ages of the children may preclude some of them from joining in. Oftentimes, parents are too tired to initiate much in the way of group activities, so they defer to the easiest thing around, which of course, is the TV.

You can break out of this cycle of busy days and lackluster evenings that have everyone going their own way. Its not entirely easy, but it can be done, with just a little determination to change the habits of evenings at home. But please, start out small. Make one night a week “Family Night,” one that doesn’t include anything electronic. Sure, the kids may grumble at first, but you would be surprised at how much they long to do something with you.

Making food together at home is a time-honored way of instilling your family values as well as sharing a lot of quality time. I know of a family that gets everyone busy cutting, chopping and organizing for their “Pizza Night.” Even the tiniest child can have fun while helping to sprinkle cheese on individual English muffin pizzas. Salads are fun to make that way too, and will even help instill a love for healthy food, a very worthy family value.

Another fun idea is to create your own family percussion band. You can start out with a few small rattles and shakers, and pots and pans to get everyone working on keeping a beat together. Patience and encouragement go a long to towards successful rhythms. Of course, you would eventually want to move on to real instruments, like african drums, which are completely portable and easy to play. They range in sizes from mini djembes of 4” in diameter to much larger djun djuns that are 48” tall. A drum will provide a lifetime of rhythm and stress relief for you and also give your children a chance to learn how to manage their own emotions. Banging away on a drum is such a relief!

At Djembe Drums Online we offer high quality african and native american drums that come in many sizes to match the ages and abilities of your family members. Each drum is made by skilled crafters and artisans who have many years of experience creating the best drums possible. You will have a unique instrument that can contribute to the goal of instilling your family values into the family you love so much.

  12. Our society is pretty demanding: Get up, get ready, do a hundred things, and then, get to work on time. With the economy struggling and satisfying jobs hard to find, it doesn’t take long to feel overwhelmed and stressed out. You need some down time when you get home. For some, that’s meditating, for others sitting and zoning out in front of the TV or doing fun projects. Walking is good, dancing is great, sports are also a fun way to get some relief from it all. Stress management, we’re told, is the only thing between us and a host of diseases and other ill-health conditions.

What to do when the weather prohibits walking, the gym is too darn far away and too much effort to get to? Get your relief at home! Pick up a drum, bang away for a while; imagine that annoying person’s picture on the drum head and have some fun!

Drumming is a great way to de-stress a long, busy, frustrating day. African hand drums are very popular nowadays and with good reason. A good drum will provide you with a lifetime of satisfying drumming. You can stay at home and entertain yourself, or you can join a drum circle. Drum circles are springing up all over the country, and its easy to find a local one by checking the internet. Some sites have lists of all the drum circles in the entire country! Maybe even the world, but I haven’t checked on that.

You can get your family in on it too. Kids love to drum and shake rattles and play other percussion instruments. Create a family marching band. With drumming, everyone can join in the singing too. An early opportunity for kids to participate in creating music is very good for the development of their brains as well as coordination and motor skills. And, having family time is known to strengthen bonds and communication.

Djembe Drums Online is a place where you can go to find beautiful, hand crafted African and Native American drums. We’re proud to offer djembes and other African hand percussion instruments. All are made by dedicated crafters to create drums that will last a lifetime, and provide you and your family many years of drumming pleasure.

  13. A decade and a half ago I was fortunate enough to be able to attend a pow wow up in the Pacific Northwest. One of the local Native American tribes was having a ceremony in honor of the men of the world. Subsequent years would be focused on women, children, and grandparents. The multi-year process was going to culminate with a gathering in Washington DC to honor the grandmothers.

It was a beautiful ceremony. There were pow wow and frame drums, dancing, traditional costumes, great food, and a lot of good will. The non-native participants all stood in a circle to watch. The most moving segment was when all the veterans who were present, went around the circle to be hugged and thanked by each of us. You didn’t have to be a tribe member to be honored; it was for all the vets. I doubt there was a dry eye throughout this touching ceremony. At that moment I think everyone truly believed that there could be Peace on planet earth, that we are all connected, and we are a family.

Since then, I’ve been very fond of native american ceremonial drums. I even have my own frame drum. I painted it with symbols that are meaningful to me, and whenever we have a drum circle to celebrate the solstice or equinox, I bring it out and relive that special occasion when I was first introduced to the power of drumming and ceremony.

Nowadays, I know there are many drum circles all over the country. It’s easy to find one in almost any town or metropolitan area. Playing hand drums and other percussion instruments are a good way to meet people, plus a drum circle is also a good way to learn how to play a hand drum.

At Djembe Drums Online we offer a variety of Native American ceremonial pow wow and frame drums and rattles. They range in size from 8”- 48” across. Some are played alone, others can be drummed by several people at a time. These beautiful hand made drums are crafted by artisans who have over 30 years of experience.

You can also find djembes and other African drums, which are made in Africa from legally harvested, sustainable mahogany wood. Each drum is a work of art, and guaranteed to bring you many years of drumming fun, whether at home or in a circle.

  14. A lot of us played musical instruments in high school, and really enjoyed the opportunity to make music with others. Of course, not many of us kept at it; life has a way of getting in the way. But still, all that musical experience playing whatever instruments we played - well, its a shame to let it go forever. Now, maybe there’s a family growing up in your home, or you’re involved in a lot of other things that keep you too busy to relearn that old instrument. That doesn’t mean your musical self is lost to you forever.

Try picking up an african djembe drum. It’s light, it’s portable, it’s even beautiful! Hold it between your knees and just start tapping out the beat to your favorite song. It will only take a little while for you to realize that you’ve just fallen in love! You can tap it, slap it, drag it around from drum circle to drum circle; it won’t complain, unless you leave it out in the rain. But even then, you could choose to get a key-tuned djembe made of fiberglass with a synthetic head. It can take a lot of abuse and still provide you with outstanding sound.

Most traditional djembes are made of hollowed out mahogany wood. They are crafted by artisans who have many years of experience making musical instruments. Djembes are part of a family of goblet shaped african drums that include ashikos, doumbeks, bougarabous, and djun djuns. They are all carved and painted in various ways to provide a beautiful visual experience as well as satisfying drum beats.

At Djembe Drums Online we offer a variety of sustainably harvested, legally produced mahogany african drums. Expert craftsmen and artists work together to create a musical instrument that will give you many years of drumming pleasure, whether at home alone or in a drum circle. It’s never too late to make music with others.

  15. African drumming is becoming more and more popular as people realize how much fun they can have with hand percussion instruments like djembes. Joining a drum circle is a good way to become involved with others who enjoy drumming. But, how to find one is the question. You may have already seen notices or event calendars around your town giving dates and times for drumming circles in your community. If not, there are other ways to find one near you.

Go online and search for drum circles in your area. There are sites that have complete lists of every one in the country! You don’t need to call or make contact beforehand, just show up with your djembe drum and a positive attitude. Most people are very welcoming and eager to share their knowledge. You will often find a lot of extra drums at the circle, giving you opportunities to try out different African and Native American drums, rattles and shakers. The greater variety there is of djembes and other percussion hand instruments available to try, the more fun it becomes.

When you shop for your own personal drum, there are a few things to consider regarding your purchase. You want a high quality drum because even for a beginner, maybe especially for a beginner, you can get discouraged very quickly by trying to play an inferior drum. You want the best quality that you can afford, so that the sounds you make are satisfying and blend in with others. A good djembe drum will keep you interested in learning how to play the rhythms and help you gain confidence as you progress.

At Djembe Drums Online we offer a variety of quality, hand made African djembes and other drums made in Africa from sustainably harvested mahogany wood grown in African nations. Our Native American ceremonial frame and pow wow drums are made in the Pacific Northwest by local artists, who have been doing this for over 30 years. Take a look and you will be sure to find the perfect drum for your needs.

  16. Why You Should Buy A Good Drum

Now that you are thinking about buying your own drum, you have several questions that need to be answered. What kind of drummer will you be? Are you going to take drum lessons, or are you going to learn by yourself or with friends? What are your reasons for wanting to learn how to play a percussion instrument? And, what quality of drum will you look for?

The quality and beauty of the drum you choose is very important. Having a well-made, hand-crafted drum can make the difference in whether you choose to play often or not. A high quality drum offers great sound, gorgeous looks, and holds its tuning. Even if you think that you will only drum once in a while, say at a drum circle, you will want to be able to blend in well with others who are drumming.

Also, if you have a well made drum it will be much easier for you to learn to play it. Even a novice will sound better and be more likely to continue drumming on a drum made of the best materials. You can find good quality drums in a wide price range. The greater the drum is carved and decorated, the more it will cost. But the sounds are all similar, whether carved and painted or not. A plainer, more affordable drum can still offer incredible sound and be the perfect one for you.

Another question you might ask about the drum you purchase is if it has been made with environmental considerations. There are many drum companies that do not strive to use legally harvested sustainably grown wood. At Djembe Drums Online, all of our djembes and other African drums are from mahogany forests that are certified as legally harvested, according to the laws of that country. You will find a great selection and the drum you choose will provide you with years of enjoyment.

  17. African drums have gotten very popular in the last few years. Many people enjoy going to festivals and other gatherings where there are African and native tribes celebrating. They find that the catchy rhythms inspire them to want to participate in the dancing and drumming too. They see others gathered around drum circles, using djembes and other hand drums like ashikos, udus and ngomas. Their hearts are inspired to become part of the festival’s spirit and learn hand percussion too.

African drums are exciting and fun to play. Not only at festivals, but at home, outside, and in local drum circles. The rhythms that come out of a group of people drumming together are exhilarating and heart warming. You don’t have to be a trained percussionist to enjoy the feeling of your hands beating on the head of a djembe, or jembe, as it is sometimes spelled. The other types of african hand drums are as easy to play, and provide a lot of color to the group.

Many african drums are made of mahogany, a perfect kind of wood for creating the tones and resonance needed for that great sound. There are some that are made from illegally harvested wood, but it is not too difficult to find drum sellers who sell only certified sustainable mahogany, which not only create incredibly rich sounds, but also feel good to the heart, knowing that Mother Earth is being honored too.

You can find legally harvested, sustainable, hand-crafted mahogany African drums at Djembe Drums Online. Each one is certified at every step to comply with all the legal requirements of the country in which it is made. Craftsmen and artists work together throughout the growing, harvesting, carving and painting steps to make sure that the drum you purchase from Djembe Drums Online is one that you will play, enjoy and treasure for many years to come.

  18. Playing Alone or Together

Hand drums have become a very popular part of our modern culture. Native American pow wow and ceremonial drums are used in ceremonies by many non-natives, because they provide a meaningful, even sacred background to rituals and gatherings. Other hand drums, such as those from African cultures, like djembe drums and ashikos, are complementary to all percussion instruments. Using drums at gatherings and circles is loads of fun and a great way to build community. Maybe you like the idea but feel that you would never drum in front of or with others; you don’t have the skill; you’ve never drummed before; you’re just basically a shy person and don’t want to be on display.

There is no right way to play hand drums. You can be in the midst of dozens of percussion players or sitting at home in your living room. The benefits of drumming become readily apparent as soon as you begin to play with a beat. You can drum a heartbeat, or a marching cadence. You can fool around with fast, slow, syncopated and steady- they all quickly get into your system and offer an easy, fast way to relieve stress. Drumming has as many benefits for the solo player as it does for a group.

Native American drums fall into two categories, pow wow and frame, or hoop, drums. The larger pow wow drums can be as large around as 30” and are used for group drumming, while the frame drums, like a tambourine without rattles, are used individually.

African drums come in different shapes and sizes too. From the tiny 4” diameter mini-djembes to the 48” tall ngomas, there are many different, beautiful kinds of African drums. All can be played together to create dynamic and beautiful rhythms, or simply alone to relieve stress, provide fun, and a soothing way to get centered again.

Check out http://www.djembedrumsonline.com for a quality selection of beautiful hand-crafted, sustainably harvested African drums or Northwest “Made in the USA” Native American pow wow and frame drums.

  19. The main thing to think about when purchasing an African drum is the quality and construction. You don’t want a cheap drum that you can’t tune. You want a drum, either rope-tuned or key-tuned, that you know you can use with others and tune if needed. A drum that requires rope tuning is more traditional than a key-tuned, but each has its own advantages. The kind of material used for the drum head is also a consideration. Again, traditional drums have hand-tooled leather skin heads, usually goat, cow, deer or bison. But, synthetic heads have the advantage of being more stable than skins in differing weather conditions. You will make your decision based on your own personal needs.

Many cheap hand drums are made of wood that is not sustainably harvested, from lumber that comes from illegal activities in the countries of origin. You want a drum that is not made by machine, but rather hand-tooled and carved by craftsmen and artists who have perfected their skills over many years. You can find the combination of beautiful, well-made, hand crafted African drums that come from sustainable mahogany forests, and provide you with many years of drumming pleasure at Djembe Drums Online, where you will find a fabulous selection of unique and affordable drums.

  21. Well, you’ve made the decision to buy an African drum. You’ve played around and made music with some of your friends’ drums, and now you know that your therapy for well-being lies in that direction. There are lots of companies manufacturing hand percussion instruments, so how do you choose the right one for you? You surely don’t want a drum that is made cheap, without the best kind of skin for the head. And you don’t want a drum that doesn’t have a great sound, with a satisfying bass thump in the middle.

Quality is really important. Having a drum hand-made by master craftsmen is one way to gain the assurance that your equipment will be of the best quality. Artists and craftsmen, who have been making instruments for generations, are one way to get quality assurance. Environmental sustainability is another factor. The best drums come from forests that are licensed and inspected to conform to the standards set by each country of origin. Taking the long view means that the forests that provide the raw materials for your drum will be able to continue doing so for a long time.

At Djembe Drums Online, we take great pride in offering the finest quality hand-made African drums, created by master craftsmen and artists, who are very skilled and produce incredible djembes, ngomas, djun djuns, bougarabous, and ashikos. Each comes from mahogany forests, which are sustainably maintained and certified by the country of origin to follow all the laws related to that industry. You can be sure that a quality hand-made drum from Djembe Drums Online will give you a lifetime of pleasure and the good feeling that comes from knowing that you are also helping the environment.

  22. Hopefully your shopping is all done; the house is decorated; everyone is getting ready for the night ahead. The Winter Solstice Festival has come and gone. Pretty soon it will be time to think about the year ahead. We Americans are great at New Years Resolutions. In fact, someone has actually taken a poll to find out what the top ten are.

Not surprisingly, getting and staying fit and healthy is on the list. So are spending more time with friends and family, and learning something exciting. What are some ways that you can meet those goals and enjoy life to the fullest? I’m going to jump right in here and suggest that you give African drumming a try. It really meets all those criteria mentioned above. You don’t have to become a solo artist on the drums to have an exciting and healthy activity.

There are a number of different kinds of African drums that you might want to try. The one most well-known is, of course, the djembe, but there are several others that are similar, but have their own range of percussion sounds. Ashiko, ngoma, bougarabou, djun dunn are all in the same family, but a doumbek is actually a Middle Eastern kind of drum, and an udu is a round vessel that was traditionally used to carry water.

Everyone in the family can play a different kind of hand percussion. Drumming is an excellent activity for physical fitness, especially if you dance to some of the rhythms. And I’ll tell you, it really stretches the mind and body to learn how to play. Its as easy or as challenging as you decide to make it. A simple beat is all it takes to get started. Then, you can learn more about some of the fancier ways of playing. There are lots of online tutorials.

So, whether you choose a djembe or another kind of drum, you can achieve some of the most popular New Years resolutions. Here’s to a happy, healthy, abundant and satisfying 2012!

  23. I just returned from a solstice drum circle and pot luck that was very exciting and inspirational! For years, we had been looking for a way to celebrate the season without having to do the crazy spending thing. Not that we don’t like presents; we just wanted to add a new element. We had already downplayed the buying a number of years ago, and like many others we know, felt that things were getting a little out of hand, with all the extravagance. We wanted ceremony and sacred reflection, music and fellowship. After trying a few other things, we discovered that we wanted drums!

Its a great way to infuse energy and community into a gathering. Having a common purpose covers a lot of ground. Invoking the Great Spirit, gathering together for group drumming feels like music therapy. We can combine Native American drums with African drums, shakers and rattles, to create a focus, which brings all of us together. We can send our combined energies out to the Universe to facilitate healing or meditation.

We also discovered that in buying our drums and supplies, we wanted to be environmentally conscious too. We found drums that are made from legally harvested wood in Africa and Indonesia. The drums are made by craftsmen and women who take great pride in producing beautiful, affordable, high quality instruments. The wood is certified according to the rules for sustainability in each country.

If adding a new dimension to your celebrations of holidays and other events appeals to you, come see us at Djembe Drums Online for drums and accessories that will inspire and delight you and your friends.

  25. When it comes to choosing a Native American drum for your ceremony or pow wow, you want to know that it will provide you with the best sound possible and that the sounds it produces will be rich and sustained. A frame drum is very similar to a tambourine, although it does not have the rattles or jingles around the edge that a tambourine has. Pow wow drums are not shaken or tapped like a tambourine, but rather, struck with a type of drumstick called a mallet. The handle is made of wood or fiberglass with a stuffed leather or fabric mallet attached to the tip. A mallet can save your hands a lot of pounding if you are attending a long drumming.

The difference between a frame drum and a pow wow drum is that the pow wow drum is covered with skins on both sides, while frame drums are covered on only one side. Pow wow drums are also much larger, as large as 30″ across. Generally speaking, the pow wow drum is used for ceremonial purposes and requires a strong mallet.

If Native American ceremonial drums are on your list of forthcoming purchases, you might want to check out those at Djembe Drums Online for hand-made, high quality drums and accessories. Our pow wow drums come in 24 and 30″ sizes and are made by artisans who have been creating these high quality drums for over 30 years. Our frame drums come in sizes from 8-24″and are covered with deer hide. Ceremonial rattles are also made of deer hide.

You will be delighted with the craftsmanship of our Native American drums and accessories. Check us out today!

  27. Every New Year’s Eve its the same thing for many folks; go out, drink, dance, scream at midnight. Its a challenge to come up with other ways of celebrating the arrival of the new year. You want to be with friends and family, you probably don’t want to spend a fortune, and, you want to be safe, not on the road with those who maybe have had a little too much to drink. It’s believed by a lot of people that 2012 is going to be a year of worldwide changes and also new ways of doing things. The theme of 2012 seems to be that of recognizing that we are all connected in some fashion; that butterflies fluttering in China do cause a ripple effect somewhere else in the world.

The new year is a time of sacredness for many. People want to connect with Spirit and give gratitude for the year past and the one coming in. They want to honor their connection to Mother Earth and each other. Often they do it with a drum circle. Friends and family gather together, perhaps a pot luck, and then an invocation, an acknowledgment of the many blessings, achievements and goals that have been set and reached; hopes for the year ahead. Then the drumming begins. Both African and Native American drums are perfect for this kind of occasion. Their historical use as instruments for communication is well known. You don’t have to be an expert to be able to find a rhythm and create a beat. Everyone can join in, from the oldest sage to the youngest cherub. Find your drum at Djembe Drums Online and begin your new tradition…Potluck and Drum Circle on New Year’s Eve! There is still time to purchase and receive your djembe, ashiko or pow wow drum before the big night. Go to http://www.djembedrumsonline.com and buy today!

  28. You Can Help the Planet

While climate change is on the minds of most of us, we often don’t realize that there are ways we are all involved in the problem as well as the solution. As a musician, specifically a percussion drummer, I never gave much thought to how my musical choices impact the world around me. After all, I don’t litter, I recycle, I turn off the lights, I borrow from the library instead of buying papers, books and magazines, and I ride my bike as often as possible. Its hard to see the many other ways I can change my perspective to be even more responsible. But what about my musical instruments?

I want to know that an African drum that I buy, whether djembe, ashiko, djun djun or bougarabou, is produced in a way that reflects my own values about quality, price and environmental impact. I want to be assured that the wood and drum head materials are legally grown and harvested, that the drums are made by craftsmen and women who know how to create a beautiful and lasting product, and who are paid a fair wage.

Djembe Drums Online is committed to selling African hand drums that are from legally harvested trees and certified as meeting the standards of the country in which they are grown. Only the mahogany trees that the forest can naturally yield are chosen for this purpose, and workers systematically replant the timber so that there is a steady supply of raw material. Whether you choose a djembe or another style of African percussion drum, you will surely love the quality, beauty, and the knowledge that you are helping our planet.

  30. It Takes A Village To Make A Drum

Something as seemingly simple as carving out a piece of wood to make an African djembe drum is surprisingly complex. As many as six people work on a drum, and that’s after those who manage the eco friendly mahogany plantation have marked and felled those trees ready for harvest. Only trees that the forest can naturally yield are chosen for this purpose, and workers systematically replant the timber for this legally-produced raw material.

After the trees are sorted and cut into drum-sized logs, a craftsman begins the process of drum-making, choosing a single piece to take to his lathe. Here he will form and sculpt the wood. His skill has been passed down to him from a master, and he knows exactly how to shape and carve to get the sounds so beloved by djembe players all over the world.

Once the drum is shaped, the next artisan takes over to sand the wood and remove any rough spots or blemishes that remain.

Painting the drum requires the skills of other artists. Sometimes several are used to paint the distinctive designs that help to identify each drum.

Djembe Drums Online works with a manufacturer whose African drums are legally produced from eco friendly wood farms. They are committed to providing the best drums for the environment, as well as being affordable and beautiful to look at. You can feel very good about choosing a drum that holds to the highest standards for responsible stewardship of Mother Earth.

  31. Although African drumming has become very popular, even mainstream, shamanic drumming is also making its way into our culture. Spiritual drumming has been an intricate part of many groups and tribes throughout history. Many indigenous peoples have a close connection to the earth and use ceremony and drums to interact with Earth’s spirit. Here in the United States, there are Native Americans who are involved in the traditional dances of their tribes. Drummers and dancers come together at Pow Wows with painted sprit drums and authentic costumes to keep their traditions alive. In the past, these gatherings were held in secret and were only for tribal members. Nowadays, many pow wows are open to the public and attract large crowds.

Having a frame or pow wow drumis a good way to create and experience your own ceremonies to connect with Earth. You can paint your drum head with acrylic paints or use pen and ink to personalize it. You may want to hold a drum circle; create a gathering for your friends and community. ¥ou will be surprised at how satisfying it is to make music with friends and how much closer you feel to the environment.

African djembes are another kind of drum that works well in a group. There are all kinds of rhythms that you can learn, that will be complementary to the steady beat of a frame drum. Take a look and try one.

  32. There are many people who are interested in buying products that are made with the Earth in mind. When you think of the components that go into making an African-style drum, there are questions that can be answered to assist you in making your choice about which company to buy from. The most important information you need is whether or not the wood comes from sustainably harvested forests. In many countries, the wood is illegally procured. Great swaths of forested lands are destroyed and not replaced or managed in any way. Even when laws are in place, they are often easy to get around. Legally harvested wood is obvious, because it will be certified as such in every step of the process of becoming an African talking drum. It is wood that has met the standards set forth by the country in which it is grown. Hardwoods, such as Mahogany, used for hand percussion drums like djembes, ngomas, bougarabous, etc., must come with the proper paperwork, ensuring that they are, indeed, environmentally friendly drums.

Djembe Drums Online sells authentic African drums, made by craftsmen who are dedicated to the preservation of their extraordinary art. Only sustainably-harvested, certified woods are used in their creation. Because each drum is individually handmade, no two are exactly alike. You will be thrilled with the beauty and richness of the tones they produce. And you will have a lifetime of musical pleasure. 35. Wood or Synthetic?

Djembes are very popular for drum circles, family gatherings, and just entertaining one’s self. There is a choice of materials that make up a djembe drum. The traditional style is to have the drum shell made of a wood, such as mahogany, and the head, or hitting surface, made out of goatskin. These materials combine to create the warm, rich sound that is so loved by drummers. In fact, most people choose a wooden djembe for their first one. Its as much for the artistry as well as for the sound, since wooden djembes are made by hand and each is distinctly unique.

But if you are a drummer who is on the go, with lots of traveling and moving instruments around, you may find a synthetic drum to be more practical. The fiberglass shell is nearly indestructible, and the head is designed to create the same tones as the more traditional variety. Also, if you take your drum to teaching or demonstrating venues, it may make more sense to have one that can be passed around without too much concern for its well-being.

At Djembe Drums Online we have both rope tuned and synthetic djembes. All are high quality drums, made of the finest materials, to give you the best hand drumming experience possible.

  36. Environmentally Responsible African Drums

We’ve heard a lot about sustainability, probably even know what it means. But how do we tell when we are buying a drum that’s sustainably made? Most African drums are made of wood; its their original material, and although there are some that are synthetic, its hard to improve on mother nature’s gift of trees.

Unfortunately, many of the drums on today’s market are made from illegally harvested wood. This practice of cutting down trees without concern for the ramifications harms all of us, because if forests are destroyed, well, we already hear about what’s happened to the Amazon rain forests from clear-cutting. It contributes to many problems worldwide. We need our forests, but we also need the wood from them.

Fortunately, there are companies that work diligently to only harvest wood that is certified to be sustainable. This means that every step of the manufacturing process is licensed, overseen and verified by inspectors who adhere to strict guidelines.

At Djembe Drums Online, our African drums all come from certified sustainable mahogany forests, with verification every step of the way. Whether you purchase a djembe, ashiko, or dun dun, you can be sure that you are helping to keep our Earth green and healthy.

  37. How to choose the right sized djembe

A djembe is usually played sitting down, so you want to be sure to have your drum be the correct size. The diameter of the head is proportional to the height, so that the smaller the head (7-8″) the shorter the drum (12-16″ high). The head sizes go all the way up to 14″ diameter and 28″ tall. Hold the djembe between your knees, with the base resting on the floor. You can tip it forward a little to let the sound resonate more, but the top of the drum still needs to be a comfortable height for your hands, a couple of inches above your legs. If the drum is too tall, it will place a strain on your shoulders from having to hold them up too long, and you won’t have as much fun.

If you want to stand or walk to play your djembe, the best thing to do is to get a strap designed for that purpose. Otherwise, you will find that sitting is the most comfortable and easiest method. It also makes it easier to trade and share drums around the circle.

From the smallest African djembe to the tallest, you are sure to find the right sizes for you and your family and friends at http://www.djembedrumsonline.com

  38. I just received my Udu! You may wonder what the heck that is, so I’ll tell you. This Udu is a ceramic music maker. It’s shaped like a very round vase, with a narrow opening at the top and a hole on the side. I was surprised to see how much weight it has, almost 6 pounds. Udus are a type of drum played by the people of Nigeria, as well as a water carrier. In fact, the word “udu” means vessel. When the udu is tapped, it creates a very distinctive sound, one that is complimentary to other types of African drums. Drummers are always looking for other types of rhythms and sounds to play against. Since the heads of most drums are made of animal skins, and the bodies are made of wood, something made of a ceramic substance is going to provide that contrast.

If you are looking for a way to join a drum circle with a totally unique sound, try an udu. Everyone in the group will want a chance to play it.

  39. When Drumming Becomes an Issue

I’ve been reading a lot about drummers at the Wall Street Occupation movement. The drummers want to be heard, but the local citizens, as well as many protesters themselves, need to have some peace and quiet. “The heartbeat of the movement,” is how one drummer characterized it, but not everyone agrees that it should be beating all day and all night, regardless of others’ needs and preferences. After much discussion and complaints to the city from citizens who live near the park, an agreement on 4 hours a day was reached; noon-2 pm, and 4-6 pm, but not all drummers were abiding by this.

One very brilliant idea emerged within the post I was reading; someone suggested that the drummers move their drumming up and down Broadway to the various parks that line it, sort of like a relay. One or two hours at one park, then the same at the next, and so on. It would remind the entire city of what’s going on and give everyone plenty of time during the day, free of the noise, as well as allow those who want to drum for many hours, the opportunity to do so.

Another person suggested that perhaps some of the master musician drummers who live in New York City would be willing to provide workshops and show the techniques that allow a wide range of sounds, and ways to play more quietly, but with equal passion. And still another article gave information on how many decibels it takes to cause hearing loss, claiming that the noise level was undoubtedly harming the drummers themselves, as well as those nearby.

Why am I writing this? Well, I think it is because drumming has become much more mainstream in the last few years than than I had realized. I attended many drum circles at Pritchard Park in Asheville, North Carolina a few years ago, with the very same issues as the ones cropping up now. And also, because our collective need for self-expression can’t be denied. I guess this issue is one of the microcosm mirroring the macro. If the protesters can’t find a way to resolve their own internal issues, how will they affect change with the greater community?

I’m rooting for them, as I sit here at home, slapping, tapping and beating my own African drum. I am very aware of the young mother downstairs with two young boys, and I would never play loudly at night or in the early morning. In fact, I often ask her if I’m making too much noise, to which she has always answered, “No, we rarely ever hear you.” Maybe I’ll get her boys a couple of Mini Djembes for Christmas.

    Following Your Beat

Throughout history people have come together to share memorable occasions, and to participate in ceremonies. There is a deep need within humans to feel a connection with one another and with something greater than themselves. Religion fills that need for some; group prayers and meditations are another way the spirit can be satisfied. And there are those who welcome the opportunity to make music together, believing that there is a unifying energy of well being and sacredness that is created in that experience.

Drumming is as old as humanity. It is one musical expression that doesn’t depend on anything but a surface to strike and desire to strike it. Our first rhythmic experience is that of our mother’s heartbeat, as we grow and develop into our own. We have the rhythm of our spinal fluid traveling up and down our backs, delivering messages and directions from our brains to the rest of our bodies.

Having the ability to carry a drum with you means that you are always ready to take any opportunity to play that arises, alone or with a group. You can back up others who are playing guitars, pianos, or other drums. Impromptu drum circles? No problem; you are part of it.

Today’s portable hand drums range from the most simple mini djembe to highly complex instruments that require tuning and care. There are drums for every level of competence also, from beginners toprofessionals and everywhere in between.

Include a hand drum in your list of ways to create connections with others and begin to enjoy the experience of dancing to the beat of your own drum!

  42. What to look for when buying a drum

If you are thinking about purchasing an African or Native American drum for yourself or as a gift, there are several things to look for. In a world that is becoming more and more environmentally aware, it is important to find out where your drum is made, by whom, and what kinds of materials are being used. You’ll also want to find out how it is stored as it waits for purchase.

At Djembe Drums Online, we take pride in providing you with African drums made of legally harvested, environmentally sustainable, government certified Mahogany. Master artisans in Africa carefully hand carve each drum shell, providing a truly one-of-a-kind instrument. The heads are made of goat or cow skins, with low Stretch Alpine Nylon HTB 5 mm rope used for tuning.

Our Native American frame and Pow Wow drums are covered with either deer, elk, cow, bison or horse hides, and are crafted by artisans who have been making them for several decades in the Pacific Northwest. We also offer ceremonial rattles and mallets.

  43. What is a Doumbek?

A doumbek is a form of an ancient drum, shaped like a goblet. There are many names for this style of percussion instrument, depending on where it comes from. Eastern Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and Persia, are some of the countries that use this type of drum.

A doumbek is a great accompaniment to other styles of hand drums, because it creates a different kind of sound, crisp and distinctive. It is played with a lighter touch by rolling finger taps and quick rhythms near the edge of the drumhead, but if you strike the head near the center, the sound is deeper, which provides a great contrast.

Doumbeks are small enough to fit under your arm or even across your lap. You could also attach a strap to sling over your shoulder so that you could stand up to play. No matter what name you call it - chalice drum, darbuka, dumbed, tablah, or doumbek, you are sure to be thrilled with the sounds it makes. It will be a terrific addition to your drum collection.

  44. Passion Band – Passion Awakening

The Passion Movement seeks to inspire a generation to live to make Jesus famous, and is rooted in Isaiah 26:8 - “Yes, LORD, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our hearts” (NIV ).

If you are a Christian college student who has joined the Passion Movement, you are not alone. From its beginnings in 1995, the Passion Movement has hosted close to 1 million university students at events ranging from the first Passion Conference in Austin, TX (January ‘97) where 2,000 people attended to OneDay 2000 (a gathering of 40,000 students for prayer and worship outside Memphis, TN) to the 2008 17-city Passion World Tour. In between, Passion has hosted local campus events at the leading universities across the nation, as well as larger regional and national events in cities like Seattle, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Minneapolis and Washington, D.C.

Nothing compares with actually participating in the prayer and worship Passion conferences. The people behind the Passion Conferences have put on not just a life changing experience but have also produced some of the greatest catalysts of worship music today. One of their CDs, Passion Awakening, is an album that does capture all of the moments from these well attended Passion events.

    What is Ngoma?

The Ngoma drum, is a freestanding wooden drum that comes in various shapes and sizes. It is an important part of the emotional connection between the physical body and the emotional spirit in African drumming traditions.

Ngoma drums are widely in use for many different rituals and celebrations today in Africa and around the world. The term ‘Ngoma’ is, by definition, translated as ‘drum.’

Queen Marimba, an African folk hero and goddess, is said to have been the creator of many African instruments. Folklore states that the original Ngoma was created from an old mortar. The bowl was worn through, and rather than throw it away it was given to the Queen. The Queen attached an animal skin to the top of the mortar and around the body, therefore creating the first drum. Since that time, the Queen’s tribe and their descendants have had the rhythm of the drum as a constant presence.

Traditional Ngomas are long and narrow, occasionally with carved feet for the drum to rest on the floor. The drummer can also walk and carry the drum using straps to secure it in position.

Drumming on the Ngoma is similar to the beats you produce when using a Conga. The drummer uses their hands to drum or alternates with sticks to create different beats. Open slaps and finger strikes create sounds when coupled with other drums.

Find your own Ngoma and experience the satisfaction of hearing and feeling the rich, rolling base tones.

  46. Native American Ceremonial Drums

It seems that every culture in the world has some kind of instrument with which to emulate the heartbeat of Mother Earth. The connection and reverence that occurs when a community creates a drumbeat can be transformative. North American native cultures have been using drums for centuries. Drums are used in powwow, to call everyone to the circle, to connect and communicate with the spirit world, to announce and pass on information, to celebrate and join together in song and dance. Drums keep traditions alive.

Traditionally, American Indian drums are made from a wooden frame of staves, or a hollowed-out section of wood. Most tribes use the former, but a few, like the Taos, still carve out a log to make the shell, then cover it with an animal skin. Those that have only one side covered are easier to play, but harder to make. The backside is used to stretch the rawhide laces that hold the head in place. It requires something upon which to anchor those laces, namely, a cross bar. Winding the laces around the crossbar is much trickier than attaching the two skins to each other from both sides.

Frame drums are great for keeping the beat in a drum circle. Djembe and other drum players can get fancy, when they have a steady beat to work with. Frame drums are also a good way for someone who wants to drum, but would rather not try anything complicated yet.

http://www.djembedrumsonline.com is now proud to offer Native American frame drums, made by Ralph Akers, in Bellingham, WA. Akers Drums has been making them for 40 years, and each one is hand-crafted. Check them out and you will find the perfect drum, drumstick or rattle for your needs. The heads are made from deer, elk, cow, bison, or horse hides, and come in various sizes, from 8-24”.

  48. Bougara-what?

This very unusual named instrument, the bougaraboo (pronounced boo-gar-a-boo), is the African version of a conga drum, with a deep bass sound that is good for backing up djembes. Sometimes 3 or 4 bougaraboos are put on a frame and played with hands and sticks. The head is made of cowhide or sometimes water buffalo skin, so it is very durable and can withstand being beaten on.

Bougaraboos are often taller than djembes (26-30”), but still very portable. The “bowl” is not as wide as a djembe’s, giving it a slightly slimmer look than the well-known goblet shape of its popular cousin. Bougaraboos are rope-tuned to give you a wide range of sounds. You will find that you will be very welcome at drum circles, since the lower bass tones are always a great compliment to other kinds of drums and percussion instruments.

  49. What is an Ashiko?

Ashiko hand drums originated in Nigeria, West Africa. A goatskin head gives it a sound like a djembe, clear and crisp, but a deer or cowskin head has a warmer sound. Sometimes buffalo skins are used for the head as well. Some people say that the ashiko is the male version of a djembe, which is considered female.

The shape of an ashiko is like an inverted cone, wider at the top and more narrow at the bottom. It is much taller than a djembe, and in fact, people often stand up to play it. It can also have a harness so that it can be carried around.

Most ashikos are rope-tuned, but there are also some which can be key-tuned. Ashikos have either goatskin heads or sometimes, buffalo deer or cow skin.

Djembe Drums Online has beautiful ashikos for sale, made of sustainably harvested wood, at a price you can afford. Don’t forget to look at the selection of djembes, as well as all the other kinds of hand drums.

  50. The first time I ever heard of African drumming was about sixteen years ago. A friend was taking African Dance classes and invited me to attend one with him. It was an exciting, enjoyable evening, and I became a regular at the classes. I didn’t even consider the idea of drumming for myself, just appreciated those who did provide the rhythms and beat.

My next experience was in Asheville, North Carolina, where, at Pritchard Park, in the center of downtown, there has been an ongoing drum circle for many years. The park is filled with drummers, dancers and tourists, people from every walk of life, who find the music to be uplifting and uniting. I was a tentative player then, just occasionally making some noise, but I loved the complex rhythms that I heard, and the joyful expression of everyone around.

Nowadays, I feel like a real drumming enthusiast. We’ve been hosting Solstice and Equinox potluck drum circles for the past few years. We usually do one or two pieces that are focused on sacred issues, like world peace or eliminating homelessness, and others by inspiration. Sometimes there are kids, sometimes its outside. But always, there is the feeling of belonging to something greater than ourselves.

Our stock of drums has increased in variety; we are always excited to get more. Djembes and Bougaraboos, Ashikos and Udus, all are beautifully handcrafted from sustainable forests, and can be found at http://www.djembedrumsonline.com where great prices, and great drums are our specialty.

  51. African Drums

In Africa the drum plays a huge part in the culture, and in the ceremonies of the villages. There are many different varieties of African drums, and they all have a different meaning and purpose. Whether the drum is to be used for a special event, religious ceremony, or simply for entertainment they are still very much a part of African culture today.

Although one of the most popular African tribal drums is the Djembe there are many other styles to choose from. All create different sounds, and are often known as the talking drums of Africa. The range of tone often changes due to the shape, and style of the drum, and by how tight the heads are. Although these drums are very popular for entertainment value they are also very significant in displaying power, and to honor people.??Udu drums are used by the people of Nigeria, and in their native tongue Udu means vessel. As well as being a drum the Udu is also a water carrier, or type of water jug that is played by the women of the villages. The additional hole in the side of the African tribal drums allows a distinctive noise to be created when played. The low base noise that the Udu creates is fantastic, and has been developed for different musical styles today.??The Darbuka or Doumbek drum is a goblet shaped hand drum that is often used in musical festivals, and celebrations. These Northern African tribal drums have very thin, distinctive drum heads, and create a distinctive crisp sound. This style is very old, and was originally made from clay, however, today they are often seen in synthetic materials. The Doumbek is played in a very light motion with quick strokes. It is often placed between the players knees enabling them to use both hands freely.??An Ashiko drum is a very unusual shape that can be found throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The Ashiko is the male version of the Djembe. It creates three very distinctive tones. When professionally played it sounds amazing, and can help to set the mood for a ceremony or festival. The unique cone shape helps to propel the sound.

The uniquely named Djun djun is the collective name for the African tribal drums developed in the Mande drum ensemble. These drums range in size, and can be found in very large varieties. The size and structure of the drum will determine exactly what name each is given. There are two main styles of this drum, and they are often played in very different ways. Ngoma drums are used by the Bantu speaking people of South Africa, and are used as percussion for different dances and special occasions. This style of African tribal drums is used to display authority as well as for a musical instrument. They are made traditionally from wood, and have animal skin covering both ends. Typically you will find them being played in groups of seven to create an amazing sound.

Whether you want one of the most popular drums, like a djembe, or one of the more unusual ones, like an Ashiko, you will find a beautiful selection of quality hand-crafted drums at http://www.djembedrumsonline.com.

  52. Djembes

Djembe drums are hollowed out by hand and then the open top is covered with a smooth animal skin. Only one piece of wood is used to create each drum, which is shaped like a goblet. The top is rounded and the diameter measurement of the drumhead is about 8-14 inches, while the lower section is smaller.

You hold the drum between your legs to play it.??Traditionally, you tap out the beat on a Djembe drum with your hands. Occasionally you may see someone use a stick to beat on these drums but this is not how the instruments were intended to be played. Their original purpose was for ceremony and communication, and even today there are many drum circles that have a sacred focus.??

African Djembe drums have become very popular among musicians in many countries. The sounds and tones are rich and impressive. These percussion instruments are also relatively easy to play, but it may take a long time to master the nuances that create different tones and rhythms.

For a complete selection of beautifully hand-crafted, sustainably harvested African drums, go to http://www.djembedrumsonline.com for great prices and customer service.

  53. Key Tuned or Traditional Djembe?

When choosing which kind of djembe to buy, there are several things to consider - the ease of tuning, the weight of the drum, and the look you prefer.

Key tuned djembes are easier to tune, because a wrench is used to tighten the bolts, (which are attached around the side of the head) until you get the sound you want. Traditional, or roped djembes are a bit more complicated. There is an interweaving of ropes, which are attached to the head by a ring that holds it in place. Learning how to adjust the knots requires a bit of practice, but it’s well worth the time spent, especially if you like the more traditional look and sound.

Because key-tuned drums are made of a colored fiberglass shell with a synthetic drum head, they are lighter in weight than djembes made from a single piece of wood. They are also practically indestructible. This could affect your decision about which kind to buy, especially if you like to carry your drum in a backpack carrier. Also, the synthetic drum head has a pitch that is distinct from the sound of the skin-covered drum, which many drummers like to include in their drum circles.

While some folks are purists when it comes to the look of their djembe and wouldn’t consider a key-tuned drum, others find the unique qualities of the colorful fiberglass body and synthetic head to be appealing, especially if they already own the original version.

You can take a look at our selection of both key-tuned and roped drums at http://www.djembedrumsonline.com for a great selection and prices.

  54. Accessories To Keep Your Drum in Top Condition

It is the exuberance and obvious joy of the players that usually first attracts someone to think about learning to play drums. Once you buy one and start to play, you may find that you are always on the lookout for people to play with. It stands to reason that you will want to take your drum to different places to participate in drum circles or other events. You will also be interested in tuning and maintaining your drum.

A good place to start is with a drum bag. Its important to protect the head, because it can get damaged by sharp objects and weather conditions, like rain or extreme temperatures. A good drum bag will have padding or a hard shell. Many can be carried like backpacks, making it easy to transport.

The ropes that are placed around your djembe are actually used for tuning it. They are attached to a metal ring that holds the head onto the drum. You make changes to the tuning by making adjustments to the ropes. You can get a puller which will assist in getting under the ropes so they can be more easily tightened.

You’ll also want to have some shea butter to keep the drum head smooth and supple, as well as your own hands. Shea butter has been used for ages as a skin conditioner, and this is a great application for it.

To find the perfect drum bag and/or puller check out http://www.djembedrumsonline.com for a complete selection of African drums, made by dedicated craftsmen from sustainably harvested wood.

  55. Why an African Drum?

Are you someone who likes to hang out with friends, playing and listening to music? Do you have a drum kit that is too bulky to carry to parties? Do you find yourself tapping along to all the music you hear? Are you a trend setter?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are a good candidate for an African drum. There are shapes and sizes for every occasion. Our mini djembe (jem-bay) is so small, with a 4” head, that you can carry it in your backpack! But you can also choose head sizes from 8”-16”. Other drums, like udus and doumbeks, are unique and easy to transport. The best thing is to get a group of friends together and have a drum circle. Now everyone gets the beat!

Check out http://www.djembedrumsonline.com to find the perfect drum or accessories. Our drums are handcrafted by African artisans from sustainably harvested wood.

  56. Want to do something with your family that includes fun, exercise, and friends? I’d like to suggest African drumming. There are drum circles forming all over the country, very likely near you. If you can’t find one locally, then it’s easy to start your own. All you need is a space large enough for several people to sit (could be your own living room), and some African drums.

African drums come in various sizes, are easy to transport, and easy to play. Sure, there are some very accomplished drummers, and you can learn a lot from them, but if your heart is beating, you can drum! Children of all ages can participate in creating or matching a rhythm. There are djembe drum demonstrations on You tube, which will give you an idea of the range of sounds and rhythms that can be produced. And if that seems too complicated, you can just keep the beat.

When you decide to buy a djembe drum or other African drum for yourself, its a good idea to also get a bag or carrying case to protect it and make it easy to take with you. After all, you never know when you will have an opportunity to participate in a drum circle! Go to http://www.djembedrumsonline.com to find the best drum for you.

  58. What is an Udu?

The Udu is a type of water carrier for the people of Nigeria, as well as a drum that the village women play. The word “udu” means vessel. There is an additional hole in the side of the Udu that creates a distinctive noise when the vessel is tapped. It has a low bass sound that is very complimentary to other types of African drums.
Udus are rounded, with a small, graceful opening at the top and side. They are made of ceramic, which has a unique and entirely different sound than drums made of wood and goatskin. When drummers gather for drum circles, the addition of an Udu brings a new dimension to the music.

You could be the person who adds that special note to drum circle gatherings. Check out http://www.djembedrumsonline.com to find the perfect drum for you!

  59. A certain date looms on the calendar. A “Very Special Occasion” impends. And, you are confronted with a task and a decision about the proper way to commemorate this event in the life of a friend, or family member. How to put before them that which will at once enrich their lives and satisfy beyond the moment, creating a pleasant memory each time they make use of what you have, with every thought for their pleasure, provided them out of your affection and care is your present “quest”. It is our privilege to help.

The universal language of music makes it the perfect gift … Someone has no doubt said something like that, if not that precise thing, when asked by a friend for a gift suggestion. Music is definitely not a pair of gloves, nor a scarf or tie, the old fall-back, the “oh, well at least it’s something” solution. No, music must be thought about, perhaps listened to, and then chosen with the recipient’s taste and pleasure in mind. Because, as you well know, music is not for the outside. It is a gift for the soul.

At “The Christian Book Corner we offer many lovely examples of the perfect gift of music for any occasion, birthday or other special commemoration. Today we recommend to your consideration a cd/dvd combination titled “Alma Mater” which would make a lovely Christmas, Confirmation or First Communion present. “Alma Mater” includes video of Benedict XVI singing, together with the Vatican choir and the London Philharmonic Orchestra in an outstanding rendition of some of the loveliest music this side of heaven. In the words of the Pope himself: ” I am convinced that music really is the universal language of beauty which can bring together all people of good will on earth.” Available at our everyday discount prices,
“Alma Mater” is only one of many quality gift ideas you will find at t-CBC.com, one among many excellent and personally reviewed or recommended products we offer, each of which has been “chosen with care, chosen with prayer” for you.

  60. What is a Djembe Anyway?

A djembe (jem-bay) is a goblet-shaped drum that originated in Africa during the early 12th century. It was used primarily by the Mandinka people of West Africa for ceremonial celebrations and communication. The drum is made from a single piece of wood, often mahogany, hollowed out by hand. The drum head is most often made of cured goatskin. It is tuned by ropes that are laced and knotted around the sides (some modern day djembes are key-tuned). Djembes come in sizes from 4” to 16” across and can be as tall as 24”. The drums are played by tapping and slapping different areas of the drumhead to create deep or crisp sounds.

If you’ve never tried a djembe, you are in for a treat. They are easy and fun to play, can be transported in a backpack or car, and many lessons and demonstrations are free on You Tube to help you get started.

  62. Blues guitar players love hollowbody electric guitars. The sound is warmer than the sound of a solid-body electric. In the past they were less popular than solid-body electric guitars for a couple of reasons. First: The sound of solid-body guitars was so very popular. People were so crazy about them that other guitars got overlooked. Second: Hollowbody guitars are prone to disagreeable feedback.

People today are beginning to look at other guitars. A modern audience tends to know more about guitars than an audience in the past. When they hear a hollowbody guitar, they say, “Hello! Where have you been all my life!” Advances in modern amplifiers have made these guitars easier to amplify. As a result, hollowbody electric guitars are more popular than ever. They tend to be a little more expensive, so some careful shopping is required to find a good one at a cheap price. Stadium WC-700 Hollowbody Electric Guitar is for sale at the best discount price for a guitar of this type.

Stadium’s high quality guitar features a double-cutaway body, with flamed maple top, mahogany back and sides, one f-hole, and a set neck. Electronics: Two humbucker pickups, one Volume control, and one Tone control. Colors: Vintage Burst, and Cherry.

Please take a look at our excellent hollowbody guitar. You will find it on our Budget Electric Guitars category page. 65. It’s time to go shopping for a Father’s Day present. Is your Dad a Beatles fan? Does he play a bass? A Beatles Style violin bass guitar will be just the thing for a happy surprise! The violin bass is a violin-shape, hollow-body, semi-acoustic instrument. It was popularized by Beatles musician Paul McCartney. Paul McCartney, who is left-handed, liked the violin bass for its light weight and symmetrical shape. Since the body shape is the same on both sides, it is easily adapted for a left-hand player. The instrument he played was a Hofner model 500/1.

While we are required to give the parent company (Hofner) its due, you don’t have to be discouraged by the high price of a famous company. Our lesser-known Stadium brand has been making violin bass guitars since the time when the Beatles made them popular. Stadium is a small manufacturer that stays in business by putting in the extra effort to produce quality instruments. Please take a look at our Stadium Beatles Style Violin Bass. The quality is excellent, and the sound is great! Musicians love the smooth, sweet, sound, and ease of playing.

The Stadium Violin Bass is a 4-string instrument, with flamed maple top, maple body and neck, and a rosewood fretboard. It has two covered mini humbucker pickups, one Volume control, one Tone control, and Goldtone Chrome hardware.

You will find this great bass guitar on our Bass Guitars category page. We are so confident in the quality of our products that we offer a 14-day, no-hassle warranty. Please refer to our Policies page for details about our Dealer’s Limited Warranty. http://www.hotguitarstonight.com

  67. Not everyone is familiar with acoustic/electric guitars. Consequently, some customers will hesitate to shop for them. Acoustic/electric guitars are just as the name suggests. They are a hybrid of both acoustic and electric guitars. They have an acoustic guitar body, with a piezoelectric pickup mounted on the side. The pickup does more than allow you to amplify the music. It also allows you to keep the sound characteristics that lead you to prefer the sound of an acoustic guitar to the sound of an electric guitar. If you buy an acoustic/electric guitar, you need to know that amplifiers for this type of guitar is not the same as amplifiers used for electric guitars, so be sure you buy the right amplifier. If you love acoustic guitars, and want your acoustic guitar sound to be amplified, an acoustic/electric guitar is the one for you. If you are a novice guitar player, you will want to find one for a low discount price.

Eleca Acoustic/Electric Guitar is a very nice beginner guitar for the price. It is a standard 41” long, with a 3-band equalizer, available in Black, Natural, and Sunburst.

You will find this great beginner guitar on our Acoustic Guitars category page. We are so confident in the quality of our products that we offer a 14-day, no-hassle warranty. Please refer to our Policies page for details about our Dealer’s Limited Warranty. http://www.hotguitarstonight.com

  68. The world about us is so filled with noise and “busy”ness that it is sometimes hard to retreat, to put a buffer between us and the world outside. And then sometimes we do find that “quiet place” but don’t know how to lose the things we have been carrying: our cares, anxieties, tensions. Music, especially classical music, is among the things, and perhaps the most accessible of them these days, which will help in both instances. As the poet said: “”Music hath charms to soothe the savage breast, to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak.”

Among the many varieties of classical music perhaps the one most perfectly suited to our goal unites the human voice and instrumental melodies and harmonies with the Word of God — in other words sacred classical music. Now, such music is NOT specifically “church music”. It is meant to be made use of any time one needs to move beyond those times and places which tie us to our daily cares. At The Christian Book Corner we know about the power of sacred music to lift us beyond ordinary cares and transform us interiorly.

In his book “O Clap Your Hands”, Gordon Giles introduces us to the traditions of Western sacred music over the last four centuries. The accompanying CD contains examples of all of these important works, sacred in the best sense of that word, designed to move the listener from immersion in this noisy world and its cares to contemplation of eternal truth and beauty. Of the number of examples of sacred music that we have available at The Christian Book Corner, “O Clap Your Hands,” a compilation of a number of shorter works based on the Psalms and other sacred texts, is a wonderful addition to anyone’s collection.

  69. While we all enjoy the beginning of summer, let’s not forget what Memorial Day is all about. Memorial Day is a holiday to honor and remember those who died in service to our country. The red poppy signifies the blood of heroes, who died so we can all enjoy our picnic in peace. The following poem was written by Lt. Col. John McCrae, MD (1872 - 1918), Canadian Army. It is the lasting legacy of a terrible battle, (World War I), in the spring of 1915.

    In Flanders Fields

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

  71. Songs of Inspiration by Alabama

Christian country music was created in American and is one of the oldest American genre of music. In its early days, it blended mountain music, cowboy music, bluegrass, and music from the plantations in the deep south. This blend developed into what is now known as Southern Gospel music and is now one of the most popular types of Christian music.

The country group, Alabama, is a country music and southern rock band that is originally from Fort Payne, Alabama. They were widely popular, performing locally throughout the south since the 1960s under the name “Wildcountry”. Years later, they set their sights toward Nashville, Tennessee and changed their name to Alabama.

Alabama has a unique approach to country music, and although now retired from touring, they did release 2 religious CDs in 2006 and 2007. Their first full length CD, devoted to gospel music, Songs of Inspiration, was released in 2006 and showcases some well beloved and familiar hymns such as “Amazing Grace”, “His Eye is on the Sparrow” and “The Old Rugged Cross”.

If you love country music and especially country gospel music, this is the perfect CD for you. In addition, we have many other country gospel CDs in the CD section of My Personal Bible Store. You are sure to find the music that you love and enjoy while praising the Lord.

  72. Do you ever wonder what people see in Christian music; the music, the message or both? Do you listen to Christian music, to sacred music? Do you ever wonder how many kinds of Christian music there are?

People will often say that they listen to, they prefer, this or that type of sacred music, sing it in church, or even play it, but may be unfamiliar with the much larger body of Christian music available in many traditions going back centuries. The choral group Gloriae Dei Cantores has been performing sacred music since 1988. They sing in 18 languages and are dedicated to preserving and authentically interpreting Christian choral music from the 11th century to today.

“Unto Ages of Ages” presents the sacred choral music of three Russian composers Peter Tchaikovsky, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Georgy Sviridov. It is a work great beauty, devotion and deep prayer. As a listener, collector, pray-er or simply as a “fan”, you are sure to be satisfied with “Unto Ages of Ages”. We are pleased to make this cd available at a discount at The Christian Book Corner where we bring only the best in Christian fiction, literature and music to your attention.

  73. We have a new addition to our lineup of products. When a guitar player is shopping for a club-size “combo” amp, he searches for an amp with the right features, the right wattage, and an affordable discount price. Danville 80 Watt Guitar Amp has it all. It has the power you need for most venues. It has a big 12” speaker, two Channels, spring reverb, foot switchable overdrive, and I/O Loop Jack.

If you are completely new to the subject of electric guitars, some amplifier features may be unfamiliar to you. “What,” you may ask, “is a spring reverb?”

A spring reverb is a component in a guitar amplifier that captures and creates sound vibrations in a metal spring to help the sound continue after the original sound has stopped. Some musicians will rock their amp back and forth to cause the springs to make a crashing, thundering sound. You too can be creative with your amp. Think of it as part of your instrument.

A well-made copy will do just as well, at a more affordable price. Our Stadium “Beatles” Style Bass guitar is a copy of the venerable Hofner model 500/1. The 500/1 was first manufactured in 1956. It was popularized by Beatles musician, Paul McCartney. McCartney, who is left-handed, liked the violin bass for its’ light weight and symmetrical shape, which allows it to be easily adapted for a left-hand player.

The violin bass is a hollow-body, semi-acoustic instrument. The four strings are tuned E, A, D, G, like the four bass strings on a guitar, an octave lower than a guitar. It has a warm, woody, double-bass-like amplified tone. Musicians love it for the smooth, sweet sound, and its’ ease of playing.

  81. If you have been playing acoustic guitars for a while, you might be looking around for something a little different. Maybe you would like another instrument to add to your musical repertiore. When you see a twelve-string acoustic guitar, you might wonder if there is any advantage to having more strings. Do the additional strings add anything?

Twelve string guitars have richer, more ringing tones than the traditional six string guitar. There is a natural chorus effect due to the subtle difference in frequencies produced by each of the two strings in each course. The pairs of strings in each of the three bass courses are usually tuned one octave apart. The pairs of strings in each of the three treble courses are usually tuned in unison. Your guitar instructor will teach you variations in tuning.

Our Spencer 12 String Acoustic Guitar offers quality craftsmanship at an affordable price. It has a spruce top, mahogany sides and back, and maple neck with rosewood fretboard and bridge. Available colors are: Natural and Sunburst.

You won’t find a 12 string acoustic guitar offered at a better price anywhere on the internet. Please take a look on our website if you are interested in this fascinating instrument. You will find it on our Acoustic Guitars category page. We are so confident in the quality of our products that we offer a 14-day, no-hassle warranty. 89. Tis the season to go shopping! Maybe someone special in your life wants a new guitar for Christmas. Maybe he wants to belong to a band, (after he learns to play). An SG Style guitar fits the purpose for the novice player who wants to learn techniques used by professionals. SG guitars are a favorite of professional players, for example, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Jimmy Page. They like this guitar style for the ease of playing afforded by double cutaways and the slender neck. Sharply-curved “horns” on the double cutaways make an SG instantly recognizable. SG guitars were introduced on the market by Gibson in 1961. Gibson is a highly-respected company, but their prices can be out of range for a beginning player.

Due to its popularity, this body style has been frequently copied by other manufacturers. Taking their cue from Gibson, other manufacturers make their SG Style guitars with a transparent finish. Our website offers Stadium WD-280 SG Style guitar in transparent Pearl White with black trim. The Pearl White finish on our Stadium guitar is a Stadium brand exclusive. No other brand makes an SG Style guitar in this color. This elegant guitar is suitable for playing gigs at the most formal occasions.

We offer Stadium WD-280 SG Style Guitar for the best discount price on the internet. It has been marked down to a very special price for Christmas!! You will find this beautiful SG Style guitar on our Electric Guitars category page. As with every guitar we sell, we are so confident in the quality of our products that it is covered by a 14-day, no-hassle warranty. 90. If you decide to learn to play bass instead of playing guitar, you will be pleasantly surprised. It can turn out to be more interesting than you first thought it would be. When you first go shopping, it is important to find a quality instrument that doesn’t cost too much. After all, at this point, you don’t even know if you will like playing bass. The most common electric bass on the market is a fretted four-string bass with a solid body. Other basses are out there, but they appeal to a more advanced player. Right now, you are planning to learn the basics on a garden-variety no-frills instrument that gives you good quality for your money.

This website offers our Spencer Electric Bass. It is a fretted 4-string bass with white pickguard, solid alder body, and maple neck with rosewood fretboard. You will find this affordable electric bass on our Bass Guitars category page. After you have played for a while, you will discover that fans of the instrument love the presence of a big bass sound.

We are so confident in the quality of our products that we offer a 14-day, no-hassle warranty on every guitar we sell. In addition, the Spencer Company offers a manufacturer’s lifetime warranty on all of their guitars. http://www.hotguitarstonight.com

  91. Sometimes a player will decide to learn to play bass instead of learning the electric guitar. In that case, a four-string bass if likely to be the first one you see because it is the most common electric bass on the market. You might look at the instrument and see that it has a pickup configuration you haven’t seen before. You might very well ask, “What kind of pickup is that?”

Brief explanation: A four-string bass usually has split four-pole single-coil pickups. These are two single-coil pickups mounted side by side, and offset so that half of each one is beneath two of the four strings. The coils on the pickup magnets are mounted in such a way that the magnetic fields surrounding the two magnets cancel each other. This causes the two single-coil pickups to act together as one, creating the effect of one humbucking pickup to reduce hum. The magnets have pole pieces with centers aligned to each of the four strings. When the bass is played, vibration of the strings in the magnetic field of the pole pieces produces variations in magnetic flux surrounding the pickup coils. Flux variations will produce small voltages in the pickup coils. These low-level signals are amplified and played through speakers.

Still interested? If you are shopping for an affordable instrument, this website offers our Spencer Electric Bass. 92. Bass guitars are made with both fretted and unfretted necks. The fretted neck allows a guitar player to learn to play bass easily due to the similarity to electric guitars. If a novice player is already familiar with electric guitars, he can add bass guitar to his knowledge without too much difficulty. Consequently, basses with a fretted neck are the most common bass on the market. Bass guitars without frets are more difficult to play. They appeal to the more advanced player, (if he can find one). If you are just beginning to play bass guitar, you don’t even know if you will like playing bass, so it’s time to go shopping for that low discount price.

If you are searching for an affordable instrument, this website offers Spencer Electric Bass. It is a fretted 4-string bass with solid alder body, white pickguard, and maple neck with rosewood fretboard. The high-gloss laquer finish is available in Black, Sunburst, Metallic Blue, and Metallic Red. It has a split four-post single-coil pickup with one volume and one tone control. The Spencer Electric Bass is an ideal choice for a novice bass guitar player to learn the basics.

  93. The importance of an electric bass guitar is often underestimated. A guitar player will sometimes play bass in a band because he couldn’t find a band with an opening for a lead guitar player. Everyone wants to play lead guitar. There is always an opening for a bass player. If you are just beginning to play, and you think there is no future in being a bass player, take a look at Gene Simmons, (bass player for Kiss). He can play his bass guitar all the way to the bank!! If you have decided to follow his example, and you don’t want to make a big investment in an instrument, it’s time to go shopping for a low-cost alternative to the big-name brands.

If you are shopping for an affordable electric bass, this website offers Spencer Electric Bass. It is a fretted 4-string bass, with solid alder body, and maple neck with rosewood fretboard. 94. LP Copy electric guitars are a familiar sight. When a novice player isn’t prepared to pay for an expensive instrument, and he admires Les Paul guitars, it is time to go shopping for a good LP Copy. Originally designed to compete with the Fender Telecaster, the parent company, (Gibson), decided to give their Les Paul guitars two humbucker pickups to compete with the two single-coil pickups on the Telecaster.

Humbucker pickups have the advantage of cancelling out the familiar “mains hum” produced by single-coil pickups. In doing so, they sacrifice some the clarity of the single-coil pickup. They produce a somewhat “fatter” tone. As a result, they have never been accepted as a substitute for single-coil pickups. Over the years, humbucker pickups have gained a following of their own, and have become extremely popular with players who like to play country blues.

If you are shopping for a LP Copy guitar, this website offers the Solara Classic, by Johnson. Johnson Company is a well-known manufacturer of guitars for beginning guitar players. The Solara Classic has all expected Les Paul features, including two humbucker pickups.

  95. Les Paul electric guitars have remained popular since their introduction in the 1950s by the Gibson Company. They have a mahogany neck with a set neck joint. Electric guitars have neck joints that are either “bolt-on” or “set-in.” Bolt-on joints are more popular, due to ease of installation and adjustment. The bolt-on name is a misnomer, since necks are actually fastened to the body with wood screws.

Set necks are glued to the body, using a mortise-and-tenon joint. This is a time-honored method of joining wood, used by furniture makers and shipbuilders. If a broken neck needs to be replaced, the parts can be very carefully unglued by a skilled luthier. Naturally, he will expect to be paid well for performing this delicate operation. Many players prefer a set neck, as they are said to have a warmer tone and greater sustain. Gluing the two parts together allows them to function as a single resonant unit.

If you are a novice guitar player who longs to play a Les Paul guitar, you are probably not ready to pay for a professional-level instrument. An excellent LP Copy can be found for a reasonable discount price. This website offers the Solara Classic, LP Copy guitar by Johnson, a well-known manufacturer of guitars for beginning guitar players. The Solara Classic has all expected Les Paul features, including mahogany neck with a set neck joint.

  96. Les Paul electric guitars were introduced on the market in the 1950s by the Gibson Company to compete with the highly popular Fender Telecaster. Les Paul guitars typically have a mahogany neck with rosewood fretboard. This is in competition with the maple neck used on both Telecaster and Stratocaster guitars. It is not a question of which tonewood is “better.” Differences are subjective. It all depends on the owner.

Maple is a harder wood than mahogany, and produces a brighter tone. Mahogany is slightly less dense and lighter in weight. The tonal properties of mahogany are warmer and fatter than maple, and are much favored for playing country blues.

Rosewood is the most common fretboard. It is one of the heaviest woods used for guitar making. Very dense, and naturally oily, the finished wood feels very smooth. The sound produced is very warm, although high end sounds are slightly dampened. High-end dampening might or might not be a desirable property, depending on what the owner is trying to accomplish.

If you are a novice guitar player who longs to play a Les Paul guitar, you are probably not ready to pay for a professional-level instrument. A well-made LP Copy would be a reasonable alternative. This website offers the Solara Classic, an excellent LP Copy electric guitar by Johnson. Johnson Company is a well-known manufacturer of quality guitars for beginning guitar players. The Solara Classic has all expected features, including mahogany neck with rosewood fretboard.

  97. If your taste in music is for classic rock and roll, Les Paul electric guitars are among the guitars you have been listening to. Gibson Company first introduced Les Paul guitars on the market in the 1950s to compete with Fender Telecaster. At that time, the Telecaster was, (and still is), enormously popular. Les Paul guitars are the only archtop guitars with a solid body. All other archtops are hollow-body electric guitars. Hollow-body acoustic guitars are not manufactured any more.

The Les Paul guitar has a mahogany body with maple top. Medium-density mahogany wood smooths out responsiveness to midrange notes in comparison to the alder wood used to make the body of both Telecaster and Stratocaster electric guitars. Alder is very responsive, and “shouts” in the midrange. This is a desirable characteristic for some types of music. There is no issue of which wood is “better” when building a guitar. It only depends on what type of performance is wanted for what type of music.

Mahogany resonates midrange frequencies well, but is less dynamic than alder. The result is a “wall of sound” effect with a “fatter” sound. The use of a maple cap serves to reduce the weight of the instrument. It also brightens up the smoothing effect of the mahogany body. It adds crispness, while allowing the lows and low midrange of mahogany to be apparent. The result is a “fat-and-sweet” sound combination.

If you are a complete novice guitar player, it doesn’t make sense to spend a lot of money on a professional-level Les Paul guitar. It would be advisable to spend your money on a well-constructed LP Copy. This website offers the Solara Classic by Johnson. Johnson Company is a well-known manufacturer of quality guitars for beginning guitar players. The Solara Classic is Johnson’s version of an LP Copy electric guitar, with all expected features, including a mahogany body with maple top.

  98. The subject of archtop guitars has been covered in previous articles. As stated previously, archtop guitars are hollow-body electric guitars. Now, to add a little more information, they are all hollow-body guitars except for one. The Les Paul body style is the only exception. These electric guitars are traditionally made with a solid mahogany body, and a maple top. The mahogany-and-maple combination creates a warmer tone than the alder wood used to create Strat guitars.

Johnson Company is a well-known manufacturer of good quality, moderately-priced instruments. The Solara Classic is Johnson’s version of Gibson’s Les Paul body style. It has a gently-curved, arched maple top, with solid mahogany body for excellent sustain and resonance. If you have been shopping for an affordable LP Copy guitar, you have just found the right place.

  99. Beginner guitar players are often reluctant to lay out big bucks to a big-name company to buy the guitar of their dreams. A well-made copy offers a wise alternative. Famous guitars are copied by manufacturers in the same way that expensive designer clothing is copied, to let them be more available to the average person. The Johnson Company is a well-known manufacturer of modestly-priced quality instruments.

The Solara Classic is Johnson’s version of Gibson’s Les Paul Studio model. Johnson’s no-frills LP Copy has all of the expected features. It has a gently-curved, arched, maple top, with solid mahogany body for excellent sustain and resonance. The Solara Classic is a serious guitar for serious guitarists.

  109. Guitar students often want to reproduce the sound of the 1960s, and create their own variations. A “Strat” style electric guitar is usually the first guitar that comes to mind for this purpose. The sound of a 1960s Strat guitar is produced by single-coil pickups. As discussed in an earlier article, a single-coil pickup consists of a magnet, and a coil of copper wire. They change the vibration of metal guitar strings to music. Single-coil pickups produce clear, crisp, bell-like tones. The only downside is the “hum” they produce at every pause in the music. As a result, humbucker pickups were developed, (which literally “buck the hum”). Unfortunately, even though they do get rid of “that annoying hum,” humbucker pickups just don’t sound the same. They have a “fatter” sound than single-coil pickups. People appreciate humbucker pickups for their own sound. Inventors and pickup designers have been inspired to create a humbucker pickup that has a single-coil sound. Some inventors come very close, but so far, none can duplicate the sound. Students live with the hum by using their pickup selector to tune it out. Your guitar instructor will tell you how to do this.

You need the right guitar to play 1960s style rock and roll. To go shopping for a good “vintage” Strat style electric guitar is to go shopping for an old, expensive, guitar. The older the instrument, the more expensive it is. For the beginning guitar student, it is better to go shopping for an inexpensive reproduction. The problem is to find the best quality guitar for the best discount price. So, you start searching for that best value electric guitar. Be assured, when you find our website, you have come to the right place. We recommend our New York Pro Vintage Strat copy electric guitar. New York Pro Vintage Strat, is the perfect beginner electric guitar. Vintage Strat electric guitars are not old, (not expensive). The end result of all this attention to detail is a guitar that will help you create that 1960s sound. We have the best reproduction guitars for the 1960s period on the market. 114. Graduation is a time for parties and presents. If you have a graduating student in your life, a guitar makes a very special gift for that special day. Summer is a great time to begin learning to play the guitar. The beginning guitar student who wants an electric guitar will frequently think of a “Strat” guitar first. He will often want to know everything about it, including how it is made. The following is some basic information about the beginning of a guitar:
A Stratocaster style guitar begins life as two carefully-selected pieces of alder wood, joined together to form a rectangle. The rectangle is then cut into the desired shape to form a body. A router is used to make cavities in the body for pickups and controls. Pickups and controls are joined to the plastic pickguard to form a one-piece electronic assembly. The electronic assembly in mounted on the body, with pickups and controls fitting into the cavities created for them, and the pickguard resting on top. The pickguard is fastened to the body with screws, and that locks the whole thing into place.
Stratocaster is the image that comes to mind when people think of an electric guitar. A Strat copy is the perfect beginner electric guitar. Our well-made reproduction guitars are a practical solution to the problem of how to buy the best electric guitar for a beginning player without paying a big price. 115. The Stratocaster brand name is a trademark of the Fender Corporation. Fender first produced this model in 1954. Since that time, Fender made many modifications to the original. The original model had two single-coil pickups, with a three-position pickup selector. In 1977, Fender began producing a model with three single-coil pickups and a five-position pickup selector. The Stratocaster design has been widely copied by many manufacturers. Copying this style does not imply any endorsement by Fender. The term “Strat” has become a generic name for this type of guitar. Other manufacturers will call their guitars “Strat-Style,” “Strat-Copy,” or simply “Strat.”
When a “Strat” is manufactured, the three single-coil pickups, controls, and pickguard are joined together to form a one-piece electronic assembly. This electronic assembly is then mounted on the body. The body is solid wood, with a flat top, and two cutaways. Traditionally, the pickguard is either flat white, or pearloid white. Newer versions are made with black pickguards, or pearloid pickguards of other colors. New York Pro Strat copy, NY9303, is a reproduction of a 1960s “Strat,” with flat white pickguard. It is the perfect guitar for a beginning guitar player. New York Pro has an outstanding reputation for quality, and you can’t beat the bargain price. If you want to play rock and roll, and you love the the bright, clear tones produced by single-coil pickups, please take a look at our New York Pro Strat copy guitar. 116. We live our lives surrounded by electromagnetic fields. Some are generated by man-made objects, such as power lines, and electric appliances. Others are generated by nature, for example, metallic ore in rocks. If you try to tune in a radio station while riding down the road, you will hear static in between the stations. That happens when your radio is tuning in to the frequency of every electromagnetic field you pass through, both man-made and natural. You are tuning to in the sound of the universe. When you find the frequency of the station you are searching for, the static stops. Pickups on a guitar behave in a very similar way. They are made with a magnet which is wrapped with a few thousand turns of very fine copper wire. They “pick up” the frequency of the electromagnetic field around the magnet. Guitar strings are also slightly magnetic. The motion of vibrating strings produces fluctuations in the electromagnetic field around the magnet in the pickup. The result is music.
Players love the sound of single-coil pickups. They produce clean, clear, bell-like tones. Guitars with single-coil pickups are frequently used for rock and roll. The notorious “hum” associated with single-coil pickups is an inconvenience that players decide to tolerate. A lead guitarist will want to play riffs consisting of a series of fast, clear, notes. As soon as his pick stops moving, the player is required to quickly turn his pickup selector to a neutral position, to tune out “that annoying hum.” The hum is technically called “mains hum.” It is like static on a radio. It is always there between stations, (and at every pause in the music), because the universe we live in is always there.
A player who loves the sound of single-coil pickups will already know what to expect. If you love rock and roll, and you have been searching for a Strat copy guitar, look no further. Our New York Pro Strat has all the features of the original. NY9303 has three single-coil pickups, on a solid alder body. It has a maple neck, with rosewood fretboard. New York Pro guitars are the best “Strat copy” on the market. They get great reviews, and have earned an outstanding reputation for quality. They are an affordable alternative to higher-price guitars, and the perfect first guitar for beginning players. 117. Memorial Day is a day to honor and remember those who died in service to our country. The red poppy signifies the blood of heroes, who died so we can all enjoy our picnic in peace. The following poem was written by Lt. Col. John McCrae, MD (1872 - 1918), Canadian Army. It is the lasting legacy of a terrible battle, (World War I), in the spring of 1915.

    In Flanders Fields

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

  118. The first patent for a guitar pickup was filed by Rickenbacker Company in the 1920s. In the 1930s, Gibson Company also filed a patent for a pickup. Guitar pickups have been changing ever since, as manufacturers seek to develop new designs. Pickups are manufactured in two basic types: single-coil pickups, and humbucker pickups.
Hollow body archtop electric guitars are made with humbucker pickups. Players choose them because they prefer the “fatter” tone of the humbucker, and they wants to eliminate the “hum” that is typical of single-coil pickups. The hollow body of the archtop guitar also contributes to produce a richer tone. If you play jazz, or play the blues, Stadium Jazz Electric Guitar is the one for you. Our beautiful archtop jazz guitar is sensational in See-Thru Orange, with gold hardware. If you decide that a warm, expressive, instrument is what you have been searching for, please take a look at Stadium Jazz Electric Guitar. It is not easy to find this guitar at a bargain price. 119. The warm tones of a hollow body archtop electric guitar are perfect for jazz, blues, country, and gospel. Before buying an archtop jazz guitar, a beginner guitar player will have a lot of questions. For example; the newbie player might ask, “What is a pickup?” Following is a brief definition:
Pickup: A device which converts the motion of metal strings into electrical signals.
Doesn’t tell you much, does it? That brief definition is just the beginning. Your first guitar will introduce you to a whole new vocabulary. 123. In the last blog, we put our spotlight on Stadium Jazz Electric Guitar. Since we have made it the “star of the show.” you will need more information about this excellent guitar. For example, people might ask, “What is a Filtertron-style humbucker pickup?” The following is a brief explanation:

Filtertron pickups were introduced on the market in the mid-1950s by Gretsch Company. Filtertron is a trademark name, owned by Gretsch. They were first used on the famous Gretsch G6120 series of guitars. These guitars were popularized in the 1950s and 1960s, with endorsement by guitarist Chet Atkins. Styles of music changed in the 1960s, when solid-body guitars with single-coil pickups became very popular. Gretsch Company went through many changes over the years. Today, this family-owned company is a subsidiary of the Fender Corporation. In 2002, Gretsch and Fender reached an agreement, giving Fender control over marketing, production, and distribution of the Gretsch brand.

In recent years, rockabilly revivalists have generated a renewed interest in hollow-body archtop guitars. This created demand for true-to-original vintage electronics. Naturally, manufacturers responded to increased demand. In their effort to reproduce an authentic sound, manufacturing companies began to produce vintage-style pickups, using processes similar to those used in the 1950s and 1960s.

Our WN-645 guitar has “Filtertron-style” humbucker pickups. That means the manufacturer has reproduced Filtertron humbucker pickups, of the type used on vintage Gretsch guitars. Our Stadium humbucker pickups are a copy of a venerated design. If you have been searching for a hollow-body archtop guitar, and want it at a bargain price, this could be the one for you. 140. When a person is looking for an electric guitar, with no particular guitar in mind, he might be attracted to the Telecaster. Telecaster is a trademark of the Fender Corporation. Telecaster guitars were first produced by the Fender Corporation in 1950. Even though this design is more than 50 years old, and more sophisticated designs have been produced since the 1950s, a model close to the original has always been in production, (after numerous variations and modifications). When produced by other manufacturers, they are called “Tele Style, or “Tele Copy.”

Tele style guitars are loved for their clean, cutting, and distinctive “Telecaster sound.” and have earned a reputation for being the “working musician’s” guitar. They are irresistible to the craftsman who loves to tinker with the electronics of his guitar. The home craftsman will create combinations of single-coil pickups and humbuckers, installing gadgetry of various types, to create special effects.

  142. For a student player with a new guitar, it is best to get advice from the instructor about what amplifier to buy. Of course, when you open that package, you will want to get started right away. Who wants to wait for the music store to open? AMPUPLUGNPLAY is the fastest way. Just put the batteries in your AMPUPLUGNPLAY, take your guitar out of it’s case, plug it in, and start playing! (Or at least, just make noise until you learn to play.) This little amplifier is as light as a feather. It is the most convenient little practice amp you will ever own.
At low-to-medium volume, you will get clean sound, with tubal quality. At high volume, you will get big, overdriven tones with amazing sustain. AMPUPLUGNPLAY is powered by 9 volt batteries, and plugs directly into your guitar. Take it anywhere! Play it anywhere! Eliminating the guitar cord reduces signal loss and improves performance. It uses the volume and tone controls from your guitar. You not only hear what you play, but you feel what you play! Batteries not included!! (Sorry folks, the manufacturer does not include them.) For your convenience, we have included batteries in our selection of products. While purchasing your AMPUPLUGNPLAY, you can buy your package of 9 volt batteries too. http://www.hotguitarstonight.com

  159. Memorial Day weekend has become an annual rite to celebrate the beginning of Summer. Most of us observe this weekend with a picnic in the backyard, or a trip to the beach. While we are celebrating, let’s not forget the meaning of Memorial Day. It is a day of rememberance for those who died in service to our country. The red poppy signifies the blood of heroes, who died so we can all enjoy our picnic in peace. The following poem was written by Lt. Col. John McCrae, MD (1872 - 1918), Canadian Army. It is the lasting legacy of a terrible battle, (World War I ), in the spring of 1915.

    In Flanders Fields

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Lover and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

  175. GUITAR FACTS OF THE DAY: WHAT IS A GUITAR PICKUP? Basically, a guitar pickup is a magnet wrapped in a coil of wire. The electomagnetic field surrounding the magnet has a signal that can be measured. Vibration on the strings of electric guitars will modify the amplitude of the signal, which is measured in sine waves. Guitar players who choose to play with a single-coil pickup do so because they like the clear tonal quality of the music. They choose to live with the presence of the humming sound that will always show up in silent spaces in the music. During these intervals, the hum will be covered by drums and other instruments in the band. So, the audience won’t be aware of the presence of the humming sound, and the guitar player chooses to ignore it. (Refer to the previous blog: ” What is that annoying humming sound?” The pickup is acting as an antenna. During silent intervals in the music, it will pick up nearby electomagnetic fields, which have a signal of approximately 60 cycles per second. The guitar player concentrates on his ability to keep his pick moving throughout a particular piece of music. For the player, the quality of the sound is the most important thing. http://www.hotguitarstonight.com

  178. GUITAR FACTS OF THE DAY: WHAT IS THAT ANNOYING HUM?…That’s the first thing many people will ask when they first get acquainted with an electric guitar. The question is more complex that you may think. Here is the fast answer: The single-coil pickup on the guitar is acting like an antenna, picking up the frequency of electromagnetic fields in it’s environment. We are surrounded by electro-magnetic fields all the time. Some of them are naturally-occurring. The earth itself has an electro-magnetic field. Some are produced by man-made objects such as: power lines, computer screens, and the AC wiring in our houses. When you turn on a car radio and search for a station, you will hear static in between stations. Static is produced by the radio antenna, picking up the frequency of electro-magnetic fields in it’s environment. A single-coil pickup on a guitar will behave in a very similar way. The more you investigate the topic of that annoying hum, and what to do about it, the more complex the topic becomes. http://www.hotguitarstonight.com

  182. GUITAR FACT OF THE DAY: Stratocaster is a trademark of the Fender Corporation. Originally designed in 1954, it is a double cutaway, solid-body, guitar, with extended top horn for balance while standing. It’s pickguard design was a unique concept that allowed all of the guitar’s electrical components to be mounted on one easy-to-remove surface. It has been widely copied ever since. The term “Strat” is used generically when referring to any guitar that has the same general features as the original, regardless of manufacturer. http://www.hotguitarstonight.com

  186. AMPLIFIER FACT OF THE DAY****About AMPUPLUGNPLAY: Don’t be surprised by that annoying little hum that happens when you turn it on. That’s the sound of a single-coil pickup. To get rid of it, put your pickup selector in second position. This causes the first magnetic coil and the second magnetic coil to work together and cancel out the hum. If you want to work with your pickup selector in first position, you need to talk to your guitar instructor for details about what to do with your sound equipment. http://www.hotguitarstonight.com
