  5. CLEANING YOUR DOG’S EARS

Cleaning your dog’s ears is an essential part of grooming. You should check your beloved pet’s ears periodically to know if they have wax, fungus, and ear mites on them.Like humans, dogs also need to have their ears cleaned. But before anything else, there are some precautionary measures that you need to do to prevent possible ear infections. Always make sure to use the right cleaning products. Bear in mind that the outer and inner parts of your dog’s ears are very delicate. Be extra careful and ensure that you are doing the right procedure.
It is advisable to use an “ear wash solution” specifically created for dog ear cleaning. Soak a cotton ball in the formula and squeeze out excess liquid. Then, place the wet cotton ball in your dog’s ears, starting at the base, and gently rub it.
Gently message the outsides of the ears for about a minute where you put the cotton ball. This will help the solutions to get down in the ear and your k9 will enjoy the ear rub. Allow your k9 to shake off excess moisture.
Never use a q-tip in your dog’s ears for it could damage his eardrum!
Try to check your dog’s ears at least once a week whenever you give him a pet bath. Infected dog ears can result to other serious health problems. If you dog’s ears are dirty and infected, he may suffer from an ear hematoma by breaking blood vessels when shaking his head due to irritation and discomfort.
If you see any lumps in his ear or if his ear canal looks abnormal, better consult a veterinarian. It could be a sign of more serious ear infections or tumors.

  10. We found Stanley at a Shelter adopt-a-thon when he was 10 months old. He was a grey and white Schnauzer/Terrier and he adopted us. He was not trained to lead with a collar, so in order to keep him from choking to death when we walked, we used a harness. He enjoyed the walks so much more. Our site offers many types of harnesses for dogs like Stanley as well as collars and leads. We offer a selection of the best quality brand names at the best prices. And U.S. shipping is still only $5.95.

  14. Dear Pet Parents,
Life’s Abundance has never been recalled. Feed the safest to your loved ones.

In October Hartz Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips were recalled due to concerns that one or more bags within the lot are potentially contaminated with Salmonella.

Special Kitty Gourmet Blend dry cat food sold at Wal-Mart is being voluntarily recalled following a positive test result indicating potential contamination with Salmonella.

Solid Gold “Tiny Tots” treats is coming off the markets due to mold growth found in treats.

Not only is Life’s Abundance pet food safe but it is highly nutritious for your pets.

When you consider health, safety and expensive vet bills this food is very reasonable.

  17. DOG LEASHES AND HARNESSES

Most dog owners underestimate what a dog leash can do for their beloved pooch. They fail to understand that dog leashes are more than just straps or accessories made from nylon or leather, but rather essential tools designed to control your dog and correct his negative behaviors. It can also give you and your k9 a less stress-free and comfortable lifestyle. For a fine selection of dog leashes and harnesses and other dog and cat products, visit The Canine and Feline Store.Nowadays, you can buy dog leashes made from various materials with luxurious styles and fashionable designs. Here are some of the common types of dog leash:Nylon dog collars is popular because of its high melting points, excellent clarity and stiffness. Another type of dog leash is the retractable dog leash. This type of pet leash, which has adjustable features, is commonly used to increase your dog’s confidence. By using it, your dog will have the freedom to roam around wherever and whenever he wants to. Since a retractable dog leash varies in length and features, you can use in many different ways.A leather dog leash is also a popular choice for dog owners because it look stylish. For this design of leash, the ideal length is usually about six feet to give enough length for your k9 to roam with great deal of control.

There is also a bungee dog leash. This type of pet leash maintains tension through the length of the 6-foot leash so that there is less pulling on your arm as you run outside or walk in the park. Given the bungee takes up the slack, you will prevent the leash from tripping up your k9’s paws.

You can also purchase a hands-free dog leash. This type is highly convenient especially for pet owners who are always busy. The state of the art design of this leash will allow you to walk in the park with your dog without using your bare hands to assist him and walk along with you.

  22. Dear Pet Owners:
Most commercial diets are not well-suited to the dog’s and cat’s physical make up and metabolism. They are not “biologically appropriate because they are made up of grain products.

Canine nutritionists explain that dogs do not process complex carbohydrates (grains) well. Studies demonstrate that unlike humans, dogs do not “carboload”, that is store up energy from meals high in complex carbohydrates. It results in an accumulation of lactic acid in dogs which causes muscular pain experienced after unaccustomed exercise).

Grains convert to sugars making it NOT a good source of protein for our pets.

Our pets need a good source meat for their protein. This will help avoid yeast infections in the ears or on the skin, ear infections, head shaking, allergies, skin irritation, itchy feet and genitals. Other symptons of grains and yeast infections may be as broad ranging as malabsorption of food nutrients, joint problems, arthritis, diabetes, colitis and kidney or bladder infections. Our pets were made to eat a good sources of meats.
    Sincerely, Jeanette

  33. BARK CONTROL COLLAR ADVANTAGES

A dog barks for various reasons. Barking could be a sign of seeking attention, anxiety, stress or aggression. But whatever the reasons are, a bark collar is a universal solution to solve that behavioral problem. It is a very good option if your dog’s barking has become excessive and annoying to other people.Contrary to popular beliefs, a bark control collar is not an unsafe electronic equipment but a very effective tool in training your dog if used properly. There are various advantages of using a bark collar. In fact, it is so effective that you can notice an enormous improvement in your k9’s barking within the first week of training. If your dog has become too violent to the point that he scares you and your neighbors, you should consider purchasing pet collars from The Canine and Feline Store. Pictured above is one example - a PetSafe Comfort Fit Deluxe Bark Control Collar. This collar can correct the barking problem and can make the people around you feel safer when walking by your canine pet.Another advantage of having a bark collar placed around your dog’s neck is that your dog will not bark when an unfamiliar person visits your house. It will also not disturb your neighbors during night time.

However, first time users of this type of training collar should be extra careful. The first instance your k9 receives a correction from a bark control collar he may react in a certain way. He may yip or jump slightly. But don’t worry for these reactions are just normal.

The first reaction of your dog will always be the most intense. But after a few sessions, his reaction will be minimized and he will consequently refrain from doing some unwanted things such as excessive barking.

  36. HOW TO SELECT NUTRICIOUS PET FOOD

The ingredients in your dog or cat food, be it packed, raw or organic, may shock you. What is even more surprising is that even the premium pet food brands don’t contain the right nutrients that will sustain your beloved pet’s health. And what are some of these important components?

For both cats and dogs, a nutritious pet diet must have vegetables and fruits. These organic foods contain antioxidants, as well as fiber, vitamins, and phytonutrients. Your pet’s food should also have direct-fed microbials which are commonly found in yogurt. Omega-3 fatty acids must be added in your list for they can keep pet’s coat shiny.

Don’t feed your dog with foods like corn, soy, or wheat, especially in large amount. Such foods are not sufficient sources of protein and your pet will get a hard time digesting them, resulting to colitis and urinary tract infections. As much as possible, purchase a nutritious pet food that has grain and uses ingredients like brown rice, oats, barley, or other easy-to-digest components. Whenever you buy a pet food in the supermarket, make sure that it contains the “complete and balanced” label. These dog foods have met the standards established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO).You can visit http://www.fda.gov to know more tips on selecting nutritious pet food.

Also, please visit The Canine and Feline Store for fine selections of dog bowls, cat bowls and other useful products.

  38. SECRETS TO BETTER DOG TRAINING

Bookstores and the internet are full of different approaches to dog training. Yet the following 3 basic techniques can enhance effectiveness significantly.

    1. Start young. While the expression “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is not entirely false, puppies learn at a much faster clip. The earlier you start training, the more success you will have.

    2. Remain gentle. Failure to act gently jeopardizes the training program by undermining the quality of the dog/owner relationship. A dog who trusts his owner and wants to please him is far more likely to be easily trained. When the owner is an “ally”, training can become a cooperative exercise.

    3. Emphasize prevention. The basic goal of prevention is to intervene before a problem is created, instead of simply responding to the problem. A strong emphasis on preventing inappropriate behavior reduces the need to make corrections, thus speeding up the training process.

There are a variety of pet collars that can enhance training.

  40. An additional fetch method is the forced retrieve. You do this by tossing the toy a short distance and actually walking the dog to the object and waiting for him to pick ut up. Reward him generously when he finds and picks the toy up. An alternate method would be to have a partner walk the dog to the toy and escort him back to you. You would reward him at this point.

TEACH YOUR DOG TO FETCH, PART 2

In fetch training, avoid tossing the object a long distance; toss only a short distance toss. Another suggestion is to use multiple toys. If you use the same or too few toys, the novelty for the dog soon can diminish. Make the toy be a special treat for the dog. A further suggestion is to hold the pet for a moment before allowing him to chase after the object. This will increase his desire to fetch, so that when released, he is eager to spring to the toy. In addition, objects such as sticks can be hard on the animal’s mouth and can even be confusing if in an area with trees.

With these tips mastered, you can go to the park with your Frisbee, tennis ball or throwing dummy and enjoy your exercise and bonding with you dog.

  41. TEACH YOUR DOG TO FETCH - PART 1

Taught easily to puppies, but not beyond the grasp of older dogs, fetch is used as an entertainment with the primary goal of bonding the trainer and dog.

One of the basic methods of training is the fetch command, using two toys in a bait and switch routine. The toys must be identical and something the dog enjoys playing with. Frisbees, tennis balls and a throwing dummy are very suitable. For dogs that are not very motivated, a food spread on the toys or a treat as reward can be used. For a fine collection of leashes and harnesses, visit dog leashes at our website The Canine and Feline Store.com.

With your dog on a leash or harness, hide one toy on your person and throw the other a short distance after showing it to your pet. Release the dog from the leash and say “Fetch” (or whatever word you prefer). Presumably, the dog will chase after the toy and, most likely, pick it up. When the dog starts to return with the toy, produce the hidden toy. The dog probably will drop the first toy in favor of the second. When this happens, wait for the dog to return to you and be reattached to the leash. Then toss the the new toy, say “Fetch” as you release him from the leash to give chase. As this happens, run and retrieve the first toy. Keep repeating this process using the fetch command.

  45. There is a humane solution to Feral Cats !

The existence of feral cats is a problem in lots of neighborhoods. It is easy to assume there are colonies of feral cats in most every neighborhood, unless specific programs have been initiated by area officials.

These programs consist of a methodical trap/spay-neuter/release of the cats. This is done with the cooperation of the local Humane Society, SPCA or animal control of the city or county. The participating entities provide humane traps to the community to be set in different localities where the cats have been seen frequently. The community participants check their respective traps and notify the authorities when they have a cat trapped that needs to be picked up. Then the cat is transported to a veterinarian that has agreed to participate in the program. The cat is spayed or neutered, then, returned to the neighborhood from which they came. They are then allowed to live out their life, just as before, with one exception, they will no longer be able to contribute to the increasing number of feral cats.

These programs may be funded by government grants, or in the case of smaller SPCA groups, fund raisers may be necessary. Sometimes a community may have to help pay for the services of the veterinarian but the vets that participate normally provide the service at a much reduced price.

For more information on these programs, contact your local Humane Society, SPCA or city/county Animal Control Department. You can also go to http://www.alleycat.org for a really good insight into the importance of these programs.

Our website contributes, from every sale, to our local Humane Society, SPCA and another important Animal Shelter. These contributions go a long way in helping them perform the very important services they provide to our communities. Please consider contributing to your local animal shelters. They do a lot of good for us all.

  48. Why Cats Need To Climb

Have you ever noticed the enjoyment a cat gets from climbing a tree? You can see it in their movements, almost like luxuriating in the sensation of freedom and power it gives them. They are able to watch the world around them while in the safety of the tree’s height. This has been bred into cats from the very beginning.

Since the beginning of cat time, cats have found the need to climb to high places. One of the main reasons was food for survival, stalking and patiently waiting for their prey. Secondly, also for survival, was for escape from other animals who might attack them. Then, there is the pure feeling of being above the rest of the world, which we know a cat feels.

A cat has an instinctual need to climb. They need a place to escape other animals and humans in their environment, like your children or another pet who might think it’s fun to chase them. A cat condo or cat tree is a necessity, not a luxury, in the mind of your cat. It’s right up there with food, in importance to them. It’s also a lot of fun to play, chase each other and use the tree’s scratching posts.

The cat condo gives them a safe feeling and a place to feel secure enough to sleep. Give your precious pet the safety & security they need. In both cat condos and sisal scratching posts, we offer a wide variety of styles, sizes and colors at reasonable prices and free shipping on most of them.

They say that it won’t do as much as our other one but, I have seen where it will track a dog up to five miles, and it is considerably cheaper. I am a firm believer in these products as I know what it feels like to lose your dearly beloved pet and the GPS tracking systems for dogs will help to keep that from happening. 52. This is a continuation of Part 1, discussing a number of important matters to think about when considering adoption.

Your new pet may come to your home and its new surroundings with fears based upon earlier mistreatment or the harsh rules of the previous owner. Loud noises may cause him to hide and/or he may even be reluctant to go from one room to another. As his new owner, be patient and speak to him softly and affectionately. Dogs are not stupid, and they will in time come to understand and appreciate your loving care.

If you are considering adoption, be prepared that your new dog may not be completely housebroken. The previous owner may have been irresponsible in this matter; and in the shelter the dog may continue to go potty right in his cage. Housebreaking is not a complex chore, and it should not be a factor in considering adoption. Using a cage can help, as can taking the dog out for several walks each day. Fenced yards and doggie doors are not expensive, and they can pay dividends on cold and rainy days.

ADOPTING A DOG: WHAT TO EXPECT PART 2

Adopted dogs can bring with them any of the behavioral problems of dogs in general. There are proven methods to deal with such problems as digging, jumping up on people, jumping fences, barking, and nipping. If he is prone to digging, and always digs in the same area, there are a number of repellant sprays that work well. If he digs under your fence, a little buried chicken wire can break that habit. Spray bottles filled with water should be kept at hand to discourage a dog from jumping up and to combat incessant barking. A quick spritz in the face will usually quickly bring about a behavior modification.

  53. I recently discovered the world’s best cat litter !! It’s name, strangely enough, is THE WORLD’S BEST CAT LITTER. ;-) This litter is made from corn, is biodegradable, flushable and completely safe for your cats and kittens. It has no artificial additives to cause harm to your precious pets. It clumps faster than other litters and has virtually no dust to travel through the air and coat your furniture. It tracks much less than conventional litters and lasts longer because less is needed to clump the waste in the litter box. It works great in our Littermaid litter boxes and I’m sure it will work very well in any other automatic litter box, as well as scoopable boxes. I just can’t say enough about this product. It is not available everywhere but I get mine at our local Tractor Supply. I have found it online but shipping is quite costly.

Another great product we offer is the Litter Receptacle Liners for Littermaid and Purrforma litter boxes. These will save you hundreds of dollars per year as opposed to replacing the litter receptacles each time, which typically cost $1.00 or more each. These litter liners sell for pennies each and they are made of a very strong, durable plastic. These can be found on our site on the LITTER BOX page.

  55. ADOPTING A DOG: WHAT TO EXPECT PART 1

Adopting an animal can be a loving and wonderful thing. There are so many more animals looking for homes than there are people who want to adopt them, that literally several million animals are euthanized each year. However, there are a number of important matters to think about when considering adoption.

Many animals awaiting adoption in shelters have been abused, abandoned, or just “turned in” because their owner did not have time for them. Many were left alone for long periods of time, and some were never potty trained. It is important to be patient and loving with them: Many are cowed, have feelings of trepidation, are overly sensitive to your tone of voice or to commands you might give them. When they realize that they can trust you, they can reward you with more affection and loyalty than you can imagine.

Adopting a dog to entertain a small child is not recommended. Small children need to be trained to learn how to treat an animal: do not hit, drag, ride, or tease him. They must understand that being overly aggressive with a new dog, especially one recently adopted, could cause the dog to react by biting or running away. An adult should supervise a child whose responsibility is to feed and exercise the dog, to be sure that things are getting done correctly. A dog should not have to suffer for the child’s failure to treat him properly.

  57. The loss of a Precious Pet can be almost as devastating as the loss of a family member. Of course, we come to accept them as our children. It can be one of the most difficult times in your life. Getting past the grief is different for each individual.

My husband and I grieved for the better part of two years after the loss of our Beagle Sam, at the age of nine years. He was just like a child to us. We still have his lifetime companion, Mandy, also a Beagle and now almost 12 years old. She is in poor health and each day seems like a blessing to us. We know the day is fast approaching when we will also lose her and that fills us with a terrible sadness.

A large part of the population have turned to cremation as a way of preserving the love they have lost. The Humane Society in most regions offers that service to pet owners at a reasonable price and you only need to call them before bringing in the deceased pet. If your pet passes away in your veterinarians office, they can also take care of this for you through a local crematorium, which is what our veterinarian did for us when Sam’s time came.

We bought a heart shaped box for his ashes & they sit on our mantle, with his picture. Knowing we are not far from doing the same for Mandy, we have found beautiful wooden chests to hold their ashes and each box has a place for their picture. It’s a sad, sad thing to lose them but keeping them close will help us always remember the love and companionship they gave us. We offer these on our web site at below retail price.

For customary burial, we also offer grave stone markers as memorials to a lost beloved pet cat or dog. These are also below retail prices.

Our pets respond to colors much the same as we do. By using certain colors in their environment we can help them through challenging changes. For instance, an orange or golden colored blanket in the animal’s bed will help to keep them warm. Pink colors are good for very young or orphaned animals as it has a comforting and nurturing effect. Blue water bowls help to keep the water cool. Violet is good for discouraging fleas. An easy way to apply colors to your pet is with colored cloths, clothing or essential oils which can be applied in between the pads or toes. For the last two to three weeks we have been working on adding a whole new line of products that we feel are not only good, quality products, but also extremely pretty. Some of our new products are Swarovski pendants for dog collars. We even have put some dog necklaces on the site. This new line of products was designed by a jeweler, and most of it is so beautiful it looks like it belongs on a woman — not a dog. We have been working hard to try to get every thing put on the site but still lack a few items. If you want to buy a twinkle collar with a beautiful pendant come check ours out. Our goal is to have repeat customers.

  65. Keep your geriatric furry friend safe and satisfied!

More and more pets are enjoying their golden years, thanks in large part to advances in veterinary medicine. But with this new geriatric pet population comes a host of changes and afflictions that may alter the needs of your beloved best friend. When is my dog considered a senior?
To begin with, you may wonder when a pet is considered a senior. The answer is that it varies widely by size and breed. Healthypet.com advises, “… some small dog breeds may be considered senior at 10-13 years, while giant breeds are classified as seniors at ages as young as five.” Your veterinarian can help answer specific questions about when your furry friend will be considered a senior. How can I create an optimal home and lifestyle for my senior pet-izen?
First, regular veterinary exams are critical to track the health of your aging pet. Twice a year visits are recommended, and often the vet may conduct a variety of lab tests to insure your pet is healthy. Also, consider switching to a senior pet food variety that will provide extra dietary supplements.
Second, keeping your animal active will help slow sensory losses. Your pet may begin to lose eyesight, hearing, or quick response with age, much like humans. An active pet that is utilizing his senses regularly may retain them longer.
Finally, you may consider making adjustments to your home and car to accommodate your senior. There are more and more products on the market aimed at senior pets. For example, your dog or cat may lose the ability to get up on the bed or into the car. Purchasing pet stairs or a car ramp will ease this process and place less strain on joints. For the outdoor animal, heated beds make cold days and nights far more comfortable. If your older dog is no longer able to go on lengthy walks with you and your younger animal(s), a pet backpack will allow her to go as far as she can, then enjoy a comfortable ride on your back while you complete the walk.Creating a wellness plan for your geriatric companion is easy. Begin with a few simple home changes and a consultation with your veterinarian- your pet will thank you!

  73. A happy, healthy dog is one that is well behaved. Dog schools are our first choice in training your dog. We use remote training collars to reinforce what was learned in school. Experience the joy of a better behaved dog with the use of an Innotek Remote Training Collar. Innotek Remote Training Collars are designed by professional dog trainers with the dog’s health and happiness in mind.
When you own an Innotek Remote Training Collar, you are supported by Innotek as often as you need. They will walk you through step by step behavior problems or training challenges you may be experiencing with your dog. Your Innotek Remote Training Collar comes with a complete owner’s manual and training video. The training video covers basic commands such as “sit”, “down”, “break”, “come”, “go to”, as well as “no jump” and other undesirable behavior situations.
These Remote Training Collars by Innotek are the most humane way to reinforce good behavior and to discourage bad behavior. Many Innotek customers put the Remote Training Collar on themselves before they consider placing the Remote Training Collar on the dog. They are pleasantly surprised to see how gentle yet effective the collar can be. As with any training tool, consistency is the main thing to keep in mind. Dogs respond to repetition. Dogs learn quickly and are usually eager to please. They want to do what you want them to do.
Sometimes, however, you get a dog that is more concerned about his wishes than yours. They are still good dogs. They just need a bit of guidance. They too want to make you happy. They just forget that when they get distracted and are on a mission. We promote encouraging good behavior with lots of praise. The Innotek Remote Training Collar has a good tone option for long distance praise as well as tingling sensations that are undesirable to the dog, yet harmless, when undesirable behavior is an issue.

  75. CAR SAFETY WITH YOUR PET

When you are in a car, there are many precautions that must be taken to avoid accidents. Just like when you are on a cellular phone, having a dog in the car increases you risks because it takes your focus away from the road. When you look away, things can jump out in front you that require all your reflexes to be aware.

Having a dog harness that you can hook up to a car seat can reduce your chances of getting into a car accident. Be safe by being prepared for all sorts of things that life throws your way.

  77. DOG DAYS

We are so used to having dogs in our lives that we don’t realize that it wasn’t always the case. Dogs, for the majority of their existence have actually been wild creatures. We can trace the evolution of the first dog to one hundred thousand years ago when dogs evolved from their wolf predecessors. For the next 85 thousand years, dogs roamed the eastern hemisphere wild.

Then human beings found that dogs could be trained and this made them useful to our survival. We could not throw a dog harness on these animals, as with later large domesticated animals, but they were quick and willing to fetch. For the past fifteen thousand years, we have been enmeshed in a symbiotic relationship with dogs.

  79. I have a friend who has a dog that she loves as much as I do mine. We both feel like they are just little people in fur suits. We love them and spoil them as much, or more than we did our own kids. I had been telling my friend about the GPS tracking system that I am selling on my web site. I had been trying to convince her that even though they are expensive when it comes to our babies — well, they are worth it. I hate to say it but, her dog got out the other day and was gone before she even realized it. She called me crying, saying that she wished she had done what I had said. But, at that point, it was too late. I helped her drive around looking for it to no avail. Then I told her she needed to call the dog pound. I figured she had lost her dog, and she did, too. Two days later the dog pound called her saying that they thought they might have her dog. It was microchipped, but by the time they found out who it belonged to they would have already put the dog to sleep. Luckily, they did have her dog. She said she had learned her lesson, and needless to say, she now has one of the GPS dog collars that I sell. She says now she has so much peace of mind about her baby getting lost that she sure wishes she had bought one earlier. The moral to this story is that if you care about your dog and want to protect them just as if they are truly a family member — forget the expense. Buy the insurance — a GPS tracking system for your dog. You will glad you did.

  80. WHAT IS A GEMSTONE?

The term gemstone is a mineral enhanced by altering its shape, normally by cutting and polishing. Most semi-precious gemstones are aggregates of crystal, like malachite and jadeite or so-called gems of noncrystalline materials, like pearls and amber.
Fewer than 100 of 4000 minerals are used as gemstones, only a minority of which are of major importance. Included in this list are aquamarine, feldspare (moonstone, labradorite), garnets, jade, lazurite, peridot, opal, pearl, quartz(in all its varieties), topaz, tourmalines, turquoise and zircon.
Gemstones are generally divided into precious and semiprecious. MW Jewelry Design necklaces are in the semiprecious category. Visit our website to see our wide variety of semi precious gemstone pieces.

  81. KEEPING YOUR DOG COOL: PART 1

Though you nay not realize it, dogs can be burned by the sun, just like humans. So what to do?

    Sunburn.

First, keep him in the shade when the sun is hottest: approximately 10AM to 4PM.

Second, apply a little sun block to his most exposed areas: the tip of his nose and each ear. Although his lip area is also vulnerable, it is wise not to put sunscreen there because he could easily ingest it.

Third, if your dog has lighter colored hair, pay more attention to the effect of the sun. This is similar to the problem faced by light-skinned humans. If your dog’s skin becomes quite red or even blistered, check with your veterinarian.

    Heat Stroke

If your dog’s temperature gets too high (over 105 degrees), he could develop heat stroke (hypothermia). Symptoms of this include an inordinate amount of panting, labored breathing, bright red gums or eye membranes, pronounced fatigue, collapse, unconsciousness, and seizures. If your dog displays any of these signs, get him out of the heat right away and into the shade. As good idea would be to put him in a tub of cool water or bathe him with wet, cool towels.

  82. As with any living thing, cats require a lot of water. If you have a cat that is not drinking sufficient water, you may notice a lack of appetite, loss of weight or lack of energy. For symptoms like these, a veterinarian should be consulted immediately. These could be symptoms of several different illnesses and can only be diagnosed by a veterinarian with proper testing facilities.

To encourage a cat to drink plenty of water, a lot of experts say the water must be kept fresh. Flowing water entices a lot of cats and some cat parents I’ve spoken with say they have to turn a faucet on and let it trickle while the cat drinks from it. This seems to be a common trait of cats. To keep your kitty’s water fresh, filtered and flowing, we recommend the Drinkwell Water Fountain. It provides the flowing motion cats love and it gives them the aerated filtered water they need. Maintenance is easy and the cost is reasonable. However you provide water for your cat, make sure you keep it fresh.

  84. HOW NOT TO LOSE YOUR DOG: MICROCHIPPING PART 2

Ideally, leashes, fences and doors should be enough to keep your pet safe at home. But sometimes things can go wrong, and it is up to you to prevent such misfortunes. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals feels that microchip IDs for animal identification are the most reliable method for the recovery of lost pets.

There are two major manufacturers of microchips:

    1. American Veterinary Identification Devices (AVID). The information is kept at PETrac (800-336-2843) after an AVID microchip has been implanted in your dog, and you and your veterinarian have registered. Your dog will receive a tag for his collar with his AVID microchip number prominently displayed with both contacts.

    2. Shering-Plough HomeAgain microchip. Once your pet has been implanted with this microchip, you will register with the American Kennel Club (AKC) Companion Animal Recovery (CAR) program (800-252-7894). This program maintains a national database and is available 24/7, 365 days a year. Your pet’s and your veterinarian’s contact info should be included. Under this program, 1 1/2 million pets are enrolled and 97% have HomeAgain microchips. 126,034 lost pets have been reunited with their owners thanks to this program, which boasts a 100% success rate.

  85. HOW NOT TO LOSE YOUR DOG: MICROCHIPPING PART 1

    Consider these distressing statistics:

Every year 10 million pets are lost. Much of this cannot be readily prevented. A collar with identification is essential.
According to the American Humane Association, only about 17% of lost dogs and 2% of lost cats ever find their owners!
Because their owners cannot be located, nearly 20 million pets are euthanized each year.
If your dog or cat is microchipped, there is a much higher probability that they will return to you safely. Microchips will last for your pet’s lifetime: there are no moving parts and nothing to replace. A microchip is a small computer chip that has contains an identification number programmed into it. It is small enough to fit into a hypodermic needle. Once iimplanted, the ID number cannot be altered or removed. The chip is prevented from moving about due to a layer of connective tissue that forms around the chip.

Some pet owners are hesitant to microchip their pet because they are afraid it will hurt. The procedure is simple, routine and painless, and no anesthesia is required. Your pet simply gets an injection just under the loose skin between the shoulder blades; it is a lot like getting vaccinated. Most animals don’t react at all. Long term studies show that a microchip is very safe for pets.

The chip receives an identification code that is unique to your pet. This code can be read by scanners at most veterinarians’ offices and animal shelters.

  87. This is a continuation of Part 1, which was discussing remedies to try for arthritis in your dog.

    2. Exercise.

It is still important that, even though your dog may be in pain, he gets a short amount of exercise. Have him swim, if he is not skittish about water. A kiddy pool would be fine for small dogs. This way there is no pressure on the joints, yet he is still mobile. Short 15 minute walks are also good for him. Activities such as running after a ball or jumping are not reccomended.

    3. Warm and Comfortable Rest Area.

Provide a soft, comfortable area for you dog to rest. In the winter when sool air can stiffen joints, try placing a pillow, blanket or soft object on the floor to help keep his joints warm. If you have an outdoor dog, let him stay in the garage at night to avoid colder temperatures.

Working with a veterinarian is a good idea for medications and other treatments. He can take an x-ray to see the damage to the joints. He can also judge which medications are appropriate and in what dosages. Glucosamine is very popular. It is a sugar that is generated from shell fish that motivates joint repair and lessens joint pain. It is a natural ingredient found in animals. But as the animal ages, the body has a decrease in the production of this essential element. Glucosamine works by stimulating the production of synovial fluid, needed for healthy joints. It lubricates the cartiledge to aid in mobility.

  88. Moving? With a cat?
Though this can be difficult, it doesn’t need to be. I have heard numerous stories of people pulling into the new driveway, opening the car door for the cat and never seeing the cat again. So sad.

So, the first thing to consider is how to reduce the stress on the cat. If the cat has been an outdoor cat or indoor/outdoor cat, you should keep the cat in for a few days to a week before moving. Extra care should be given to keep the cat confined to a private room while movers are loading household items, preferably with a companion person or other friendly pet. Transport the cat in a familiar pet carrier.

Prior to the movers arriving at the new house, you should have set up a room with the cat’s familiar surroundings, such as a condo/tree, cat bed, litter box, food & water bowls and toys. A large note should be taped to the outside of the door of this room, stating “Do Not Enter”, to remind family members as well as the movers. Then, after all of the movers have left, open the door and let the cat roam around it’s new home. Outside access should only be given with supervision until you are sure the cat has accepted the move and it’s new surroundings.

I followed all of these steps and still had two pretty stressed cats. These two cats, who had previously only tolerated each other, were huddled together like one might protect the other. However, it only took a few hours of our reassurances and letting them roam before they accepted their new home. I had made a decision to make them both “house cats”. One had been allowed to roam during the day and called in at night. The other was allowed to go out into a fenced back yard but never left the yard. In order to keep them happy, we built a two room outdoor kennel, giving them some access to the outdoors but the safety of the house at night. They, along with the three we’ve acquired since the move, have adjusted beautifully.

A “house cat” typically lives 12 to 20 years while a cat who is allowed to roam has a life expectancy of 2 to 5 years. Make a decision to keep your precious pet safe.

  89. Arthritis is a condition in 20% of all dogs over 7 years old. Know to veterinarians as Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD), it one of the major recurring problems in dogs that they treat. Arthritis in dogs can affect their back, elbows, shoulders, hips, and neck.
Signs of arthritis in dogs include the following:
Favoring one sideover another. His joints could be too painful on one side, so to avoid pain he tends to put pressure on the other side.
Unusual weight gain. He would not be getting the exercise a healthy dog gets, being lethargic and sleeping more.
Not as playful, due to pain.
Some remedies you might want to try:
    1. Diet.
Dry dog food consists mainly of grains which cause joint inflammation. A better choice would be to feed him raw or cooked meat, as well as cooked vegetables. In addition to being healthier, such a diet could help alleviate some of the swelling in his joints. Avoid spicy foods and even onions. Omega 3 fatty acids can be used as a supplement to reduce joint inflammation. Also try fish capsules and flax seed, both of which can be anti-inflammatory.
More remedies will appear in Part 2. You can also check The Canine and Feline Store for products, services and information.

  91. Remember the “Home Alone” movies? Remember all the mischief that young boy got into? Now, imagine that’s your cat. Our pets must sometimes be left alone. Perhaps, it’s everyday, when you have to go to work. You need to give your cat some things to keep it busy and out of trouble.

First thing to consider is it’s own furniture where it can scratch to its hearts content. That can be a scratching post or a cat condo. Secondly, a few catnip toys. Cats love to push these little objects around, eventually hiding them for you to find later, pushed under the door of a closet or cabinet. Next, an interactive toy, like Peek-A-Prize, can keep them busy for a good while. Keep their toys where they can easily find them.

With the proper surroundings, your cat can be kept safe, your furniture preserved and your precious pet will be happier.

  92. At FourPawsDogCollars.com we have a unique selection of jeweled dog collars, but it is going to get even better. We have lined up another shipper that has some of the most beautiful jeweled dog collars that I have seen. Some of these jeweled dog collars are on our site, but the ones we don’t have — WOW! They are beautiful. If you want bling, these have bling with a capital B!! But, yet they are still very elegant — not gawdy. Some of them are even called “necklaces” instead of collars. Some of them actually look like very expensive diamond women’s necklaces. One of them even has earrings for mom to wear that match the necklace. With these dog collars you can buy them with pendants, or without. And the pendants are just as beautiful (maybe more so) than the actual collars. Keep watching our site for these new collars. They will be there just as soon as we can get them there. We are working on getting the site set up and doing all the things we have to do to get the images to where people can see them.
