In the instance of persons with a progressive disorder such as arthritis, particularly rheumatoid arthritis, everyday activities may be difficult. It has long been known that exercise is beneficial for those with arthritis. The basic types include range-of-motion or stretching exercise, strengthening or muscle tightening exercise and endurance or aerobic exercise. Some less common types of exercise that are becoming more recognized are yoga, Tai Chi and water exercises. The yoga has controlled movements, stretches, pressures and relaxation. The Tai Chi has fluid and flowing circular movements. The beneficial effect of water therapy exercises is personally known .A dear friend in June of last year was at a point of being almost incapacitated. She was barely able to get around with a walker. This was quite alarming as she lived alone. At the suggestion of her physician, she started a regular program of exercises in the swimming pool. By Thanksgiving she was out and about, using a cane only for stability. She was able to climb stairs without difficulty. Her mobility was at a level it had not been in years. As noted in one of my previous blogs, the Americans with Disabilities Act required facilities for handicapped individuals utilized by the public. These ranged from elevated toilets with handrails to lavatories adjusted for wheelchairs. Many fail to realize that such needs also carryover into the individual setting. In addition to the ramps that are visible inside or outside the home, assistance is needed for everyday functioning in the private setting. A Greek vase depicts a bed on wheels. Engravings from China in 530 A.D. reveal a wheeled chair. Even the wheelbarrow was used to transport the sick or disabled. King Phillip II of Spain in 1595 had a rolling chair with foot rests. Over the years, the wheelchair progressed from reclining convertible furniture, to self- propelled, to three wheeled, to manual and motorized versions. With the exception of various materials being utilized, this is where we now find the wheelchair. It utilizes strong, lightweight construction and is foldable for storage. Many styles exist, such as for sporting competitions or for use on the beach. The powered wheelchair may be maneuvered with manual steering or the use of a toggle switch. In the last blog, it was noted that the walker is the most stable type of walking aid. Also noted were the variations on this walking aid. There were some with wheels and some without wheels. They tend to be lightweight, portable, sturdy and foldable. Now I should like to advance to the more complex forms. Quite often, you see individuals maneuvering around with 4-wheeled rolling walker. It is known as a Rollator. Usually it comes equipped with wire or mesh baskets and folding seat/back. A locking brake mechanism is normally on the handles. It is height adjustable and folds for storage. A similar device, more appropriate for individuals with severe mobility problems, is the

In the last blog on mobility aids, I noted the long and varied history of the Walking Cane. It ranged from the broken off limb used as a staff for the shepherd to the status of a fashion statement. Arthritis does exist in children. Perhaps one child in 1000. As with many disorders, if you don’t think about the possibility, it may be difficult to diagnose. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, the most common type of arthritis in children, has three forms distinguished by the effect on the child’s body. Pauciarticular rheumatoid (JRA) arthritis involves less than four joints. Polyarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis effects four or more joints. Systemic-onset juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, known as Still’s disease, presents with fevers and rash that may involve internal organs. All of these are treated symptomatically. Over time the signs and symptoms will subside and have no long term effect. This is in sharp contrast to the adult form of rheumatoid arthritis that is progressively debilitating. The treatment may include anti-inflammatory drugs, predisone and possibly other medications depending on any resistance. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It is sometimes referred to as “wear and tear” arthritis. The cause of this disorder involves the cartilage within the joint that covers the ends of the bones. This cartilagenous covering allows for smooth movement. It can be disrupted by trauma or more frequently repetitive motion. There is also a pressure effect. If one repeats the same movement over time, it gradually wears down the cartilage. If someone continually walks or stands on a hard surface such as a concrete floor for many years, it also wears down the cartilage. Eventually there is bone rubbing on bone. This is indeed painful. The resultant pain, discomfort and/or weakness may necessitate the use of supporting items such as canes, walkers or other hardware. Many treatments have been proposed to build up the cartilage. There has even been attempts at cartilage transplants. The long term effect may be the need for surgical intervention. This may range from arthroscopic procedures to actual joint replacements. Unfortunately, the results are often less than desired with permanent degrees of debility. The use of canes and walkers and even wheelchairs may become a lifelong necessity to facilitate support and movement. A new year for New Year’s Resolutions to Lose Weight
We all do it. Start of the New Year with the goal to be healthier and lose the 10, 20 or 30 plus pounds. (some of which we may have gained during the holidays).
I have been an athlete all of my life and still had those last 10 lbs to lose. I’ve tried many different products, exercise, and diets and still could not get those last few pounds off.

I finally was able to get an H1N1 shot today. I know that we all do what we can to keep ourselves and our families healthy. More than 10.3 million people over 60 have diabetes. And now there is a type refered to as “pre-diabetes”. Diabetes, 1: “I’m sorry but you have diabetes”. Those are the words I heard in 1985 that changed my life. My first thoughts were; What is diabetes? Am I going to die? How did I get this? Wheatgrass (Wheat Grass)
PH and Chlorophyll
Good Health begins with a proper PH. 7.0 is considered neutral. Anything above 7.0 is considered alkaline. Anything below 7.0 is considered acid. The idea PH for the human body is 7.365-7.45. If the blood Ph falls below 7.0 depression of the nervous system is severe enough to put you into a state of coma and you die.
On the other hand, if you are too alkaline, blood Ph over 7.45, the nerves are over excited, repeating nerve impulses repetitively, causing nervousness, and muscle spasms. If the blood Ph continues to rise you will go into convulsions and die.
Rarely is a person over alkaline. It is more likely you are over acidic. If you are chronically tired, experiencing inflammation, developing osteoporosis, and aging prematurely, you may be over acidic. If you are prone to infections you may be over acidic. Strong perspiration odor indicates you are over acidic.
The very act of living and breathing creates an acidic condition. Exercising creates uric acid. Uric acid is what makes your muscles sore when you exercise. Stress makes our bodies acidic. A diet of protein, grains, sugar, refined foods, coffee, and alcohol are acid forming.
Many whole fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds are alkaline. That is why you need 5-6 servings of alkaline vegetables a day to offset the acidicity.
All greens including wheatgrass, (wheat grass) contain chlorophyll. Chlorophyll neutralizes the acids in your body. Chlorophyll is what makes a plant green. Plants get chlorophyll from the sunlight. The greener the plant, the more chlorophyll the plant has.

Sunlight is responsible for all of life on Earth. The colors we perceive from sunlight (i.e. the visible spectrum or rainbow) create for us all of the beauty that our Earth provides. Of course everyone knows this. We are all affected by the brightness or lack of brightness a day has to offer. But are you aware that it is sunlight and the rainbow colors that regulate virtually all of our biochemical processes in our bodies. All imbalance can be corrected simply by understanding what frequency (or color) is needed to counter the unbalanced frequency. Color-Therapy makes this not only possible but easy! A simple yet highly effective method of bringing your chakra’s back into balance is with a chakra meditation exercise. Perform the following exercise lying down in a quiet place where you will have approximately 15minutes. Start with your root chakra (located at the pubic area) and gently rotate your hand in a counterclockwise motion while thinking about the color RED. Breathe freely and deeply for several breaths. Complete the exercise by gently rotating your hand now in a clockwise pattern to “close” the chakra back to it original direction. Repeat this exercise over each chakra area of the body while concentrating on the associated color. It would also be helpful to have a silk scarf or eye pillow of the color that relates to each chakra placed over each area while performing this exercise.
