I was listening to a commercial by an emergency agency in my area about fire safety in the home today. The agency reminded me that we all need fire safety equipment in our homes, and we need to plan escape routes with our families. Then the announcer suggested something that I had never heard before. He said that, in case of a fire, we always need two ways to exit a room. In most rooms that would be the door and a window. If you live in a one story house, this should not be a problem. While our weather has been unusually cold, we have been enjoying our fireplace. Not much can compare with a fire in the fireplace and family gathered around enjoying time together. Situational Awareness. Work on always being aware and alert especially when in public. Walk with your head up and always scanning your environment with your eyes. Stay visible, stay NOT vulnerable. Know what physical barriers are around that you can use to your advantage. Where can you run to that is highly visible and well light (bad guys fear being caught more than anything). If that still small voice is telling you to not go that way, don’t! Above all else, listen to your inner protector!

The way that our economy and society is today, I sure feel a lot more comfortable and secure having a gun in our house. I can understand why people have multiple guns as well. Today is most definitely the day to consider your personal security! They just caught a burglar that had broken into about 15 homes in my father’s neighborhood, and it turned out to be a 24 year old mother of three! She performed all of her robberies during the day, entering houses through any open window. She only took items in plain view or in common places, and she left all of the homes through the back door. It was no surprise to hear the news today, that my father’s neighbor was robbed! I grew up in a working class blue collar neighborhood outside Chicago. I am so sick of poor quality consumer goods. This recession has further enforced the craze of finding the cheapest priced items for us to purchase. My wife was not to happy that I wanted a gun for the house. We have a 2 year old and a new born, but the conversation comes up every week about gun safety. A local television station in Cincinnati tested a fireproof safe from Walmart. The safe was $20. “We put a run of the mill fire proof safe to the test. For fear of catching the station on fire we called in the professionals from the Cincinnati Fire Department to help us out. We put a dollar in the safe, locked it up and secured it under a pile of wood. The firefighters lit the pile on fire and let it burn for ten minutes. Typically it takes about ten minutes or less for the fire department to arrive, set up and begin fighting the fire. About six minutes into the burning the safe started to catch fire. After ten minutes passed the safe was in pieces, and our dollar was charred. They used an infrared heat sensor to measure the temperature of the flames surrounding the box. The temperature of the fire was around 1500 degrees and most house fires are between 1500 and 2000. But, the packaging of the safe does say the maximum heat is one-thousand degrees.” In result, it lasted for about 6 minutes. I was recently searching for a free standing safe to protect my family’s original documents that have been pasted down for generations. I found my self a bit perplexed at the huge difference in price between safes that appear to be the same size. After further research, I found the fire rating of a safe has much to do with this. A safe may have large demensions but cannot endure a house fire for more than a few minutes without damaging the contents. My home security safe is an old-fashioned combination lock safe from American Security. I know that there are all these new digital technologies, and even fingerprint recognition locks for safes, but I just don’t feel that secure with any of this new “state-of-the-art” locking mechanisms. Especially fingerprint technology. Since it is relatively new in the industry, and most companies are trying very hard to compete in a price driven marketplace, I have very little confidence in the reliability, quality and durability of these devises. They, along with electronic locking mechanisms, may impress your friends, but they require a power source, and like any other electronic device, can have glitches and be a confusing disaster to trouble shoot. I just purchased my first gun this week as I have become more and more uncertain about our failing economy. Non-Lethal Remedy for Punks- $79.95!

The animal bit the man on the neck. He died at the site near Big Bear Lake.

A 700-pound grizzly bear attacked and killed a Canyon Country man Tuesday at a compound near Big Bear Lake that trains wild animals for movies and television work, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said. For unknown reasons, the bear lunged at 39-year-old Stephan Miller, a trainer at Randy Miller’s Predators in Action, about 3 p.m. and bit him in the neck, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Cindy Beavers. Two other trainers subdued the 5-year-old, 7 1/2 -foot-tall grizzly with pepper spray and were unhurt, Beavers said. The Predators in Action website says the bear appears in the recent WiIl Ferrell movie “Semi-Pro.” Miller, cousin of Randy Miller, was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s spokeswoman said. Attempts to reach Randy Miller, who is also a stuntman, were not successful. The Predators in Action website says it has the “best trained grizzly bears in the business today. “Beavers said all three trainers were experienced. They were working with the grizzly in a secured outdoor area when the attack occurred, she said. She added that officials from Cal OSHA and the state Department of Fish and Game were investigating, and it was not immediately known what would happen to the bear. Fish and Game spokesman Harry Morse said its patrol chief knew of no safety violations at Predators in Action. He said the department’s main task with such companies is to make certain the animals are well treated. “This is a commercial venture,” he said of Predators in Action. “It’s part of the entertainment industry.” Morse said a preliminary examination of the sprawling compound later Tuesday found nothing unusual.
