Our men and women of the armed forces are appreciated. Until you have been in their shoes, you may not understand how great it is to receive some small thing that increases their comfort and well-being. Things that we take for granted they may be short on, lost, or gotten destroyed or used up during operations. Public awareness is surely up, given recent disasters and associated media coverage. However, how many of us have actually taken steps to prepare for a disaster? Making a plan in advance is one way of shortening the impact of the initial shock, because you have already considered some issues. Look at what is happening in Japan! All manner of services are being disrupted. What if that happens here from an earthquake, flood, or other disaster? Fresh, clean, safe water could be scarce.
Bleach can be used in an emergency to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe, or bleaches with added cleaners. You could also get a disaster relief kit that contains enough water for 3 days. That should allow enough time for emergency services to assist, or for you to get to a place with safe water.
