Coal burning power plants produce by far the largest percentage of electricity used in the U.S. While there is not any shortage of coal it is extremely costly both financially as well as environmentally. Coal has to be mined; mining causes a variety of serious environmental issues, as well as is extremely expensive. I was shocked to read all of the things that happen during coal mining. Whether strip mining or surface mining the cost and environmental impact is staggering. According to FEMA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric administration and many other reputable Government and private organizations over the last 31 years there has been a total of 99 weather related disasters that have cost $1 billion or more in damages. That is an average of 3.2 big weather disasters each year. So far in 2011 we are already over 3x that number with 10!

Since the massive $2 billion blizzard that paralyzed cities from Chicago to the North East in January it has been one emergency to the next costing billions and billions of dollars and over 700 lives lost. Last year, 2010 set a new record for total number weather disasters with 81. This year we are on pace for well over 100!

All of this while scary is fact. The main thing to be taken from it is we all need to be prepared when a disaster happens. Kids these days start watching TV and playing video games way before they start school. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) two-thirds of infants and toddlers watch a screen an average of 2 hours a day. Kids under age 6 watch an average of about 2 hours of screen media a day, primarily TV and videos or DVDs and kids and teens 8 to 18 years spend nearly 4 hours a day in front of a TV screen and almost 2 additional hours on the computer (outside of schoolwork) and playing video games. This is way too much time, and time that used to be spent playing with traditional indoor and outdoor toys and games.

For babies, toddlers and preschoolers TV and other electronic media gets in the way of exploring, playing, and interacting with parents and other kids, things that encourages learning as well as healthy physical and social development. As your kids get older, too much TV and computer or video game time interferes with activities such as sports, reading, doing homework, playing with friends, and spending time with family. Children who consistently spend more than 4 hours per day watching TV are more likely to be overweight, not get as good of grades and be less socially active.
