Laser Engraving—Health Hazards?
Laser engraving produces so many beautiful designs on many things. And tons of people are going into the ‘engraving’ business because it’s fun, creative, and usually creates good revenues. More and more engravers, however, are finding out that the particles and chemical fumes generated from laser engraving are very harmful, even disease-causing.
As a laser ‘cuts’ a piece of metal, plastic, or other material, it burns and disintegrates to remove material. The waste material that is produced is in the form of particles and chemical vapors. The particles are very small, measured in microns, are small enough to be inhaled into the lungs, and
depending on the material, can cause serious side effects. Ceramics, glass, and metal particles are sharp and irritate the respiratory tract, eyes, nose, skin, etc.
Metals like chromium and nickel that create carcinogenic (cancer-causing) fumes when burned / cut with a laser. When plastics, rubber, and powder coated materials are ‘lasered’, they produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Synthetic polymers or plastics like polyethylene, polycarbonate, polypropylene, as well as synthetic rubber, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene, phosgene create another set of problems. When polyethylene is ‘lasered’ or engraved, for example, it produces formaldehyde, a noxious VOC known to cause cancer, and asthma and allergy attacks. Rubber releases benzene, an even stronger VOC proven to cause anemia, low white blood cell count, and cancer.
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that is used to make a signs, figurines, flooring and other products emits extremely toxic hydrogen chloride acid gas, dioxin, ethylene dichloride and vinyl chloride ALL at the same time–which is a very bad situation if you’re breathing these fumes! Not only do these PVC vapors / particles cause cancer, they can also cause neurological damage, as well as reproductive and immune system damage. Phosgene, originally designed for military purposes as a poison in the First World War, is used in many plastics–and when this material is used for engraving, the resulting fumes have been found to destroy lung tissue!
Wow! Lots of dangerous stuff with laser engraving! Well, enough about the bad news. The GOOD news is that these particles and chemicals can easily be removed, with the right equipment. One very good unit for laser engraving is the RSU 12 air purifier. This unit can be placed near the table where you work to immediate remove pollutants before you breathe them. Another very good air cleaner for project areas is the Aller Air 6000 Vocarb , which features a full 28 pounds of activated carbon to designed to remove harmful chemicals and VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) present in paints and solvents, plus a medical-grade HEPA filter. Some people use one of each unit—one to capture particles / vapors at the source, and another to remove any remaining pollutants from the room. As you can see, the pollutants associated with laser engraving are very harmful to your health, so you can’t be too careful! If you’re already using an Electrocorp air purifier, we have all the filters, gaskets, inserts, etc.–for optimum safety, filters for this application do need to be changed every 3-5 years, depending on use.

Arts and Crafts: Is an Air Purifier Really Necessary?
We really don’t think about clean air when we’re doing art and craft projects. And sometimes, if it’s something where no chemicals, paints, varnishes are used, or there are no little particles released into the air from grinding, polishing, etc, there’s really no need. There are times, however, where harmful chemicals / particles are present—and if these projects are done on a regular basis, they do present a health hazard.
Pretty much any art or craft project that involves the use of paints, fixatives, sealants, varnishes or solvents is going to release these airborne fumes or vapors into the air, both while they are being used and from slow container leakage. A lot of varnishes and solvents have petroleum-based elements and other chemicals that have been proven to cause cancer, nervous system disorders, brain disorders and more.
And if the project involves any grinding or polishing, or even dusty materials, there are going to be particles released into the air that aren’t good for us. Many times these tiny particles, such as from metal or ceramic grinding or polishing, are very sharp and actually can imbed themselves in the lining of the airway, in the lungs, and make tiny cuts in the tissue, leading to all sorts of irritation, infections, and sometimes lung disease. Just read the labels on the materials you use—in most cases, there are warnings. Even if you’re just an art collector, often those pieces of art bring dust and residues that become airborne–and if those pollutants aren’t captured, we breathe them.
No one wants to have health issues from the art or craft projects they love. And, if it’s a public place where the projects are being done or you have employees, students, etc, there are actual OSHA laws requiring some kind of ventilation or capturing system to be in place—if they are not in place, there are often fines and citations issued! Ouch!
Getting and keeping clean air is fairly simple, however. First, make sure you have ventilation. Second, if you use solvents and paints, don’t store them in the same place that you do your projects, i.e. in the garage. The fumes build up over time and if you do those projects where the chemicals are stored, you’re getting a concentrated dose–store paints and chemicals in a shed, away from your workspace. Third, consider getting an air purifier. There are several that are capable of effectively removing the harmful particles and chemicals associated with most arts and craft projects.

ARE OIL PAINTINGS GOING AWAY?

PABLO PICASSO, THE CUBISM PAINTER
Virtually everyone is familiar with the fact that Pablo Picasso is one of the greatest artists of all time. This incredibly talented artist went through several “periods” of style in his painting. Picasso is well known for his Blue Period in which his art was done in muted tones of blue and blue-green. He then progressed to the Rose Period where shades of rose, pink and orange were added to his fine art paintings. However, Pablo Picasso is most famously known for his Cubism style of painting.

THE MARKET FOR FINE ART IS BACK!!
There have been several recent write-ups, including a New York Times article entitled “Blue Skies and Blue-Chip Sales at Art Basel Miami” by Kate Taylor, which describes the boom in the sale of fine art. The rebound in sales took place in various galleries in Florida, however, this increase in activity has been taking place throughout the world. There could be many reasons for this resurgence.

A TRIBUTE TO PINO
There are many very famous artists whose names are instantly recognizable, however, Pino Daeni is one that may be more recognizable by his elegantly sensuous artworks. Pino, who died May 25, 2010, created sensitive, elegant and emotionally charged works of art for almost 40 years. He was the master of creating images for the covers of romance novels, but also eliciting feelings of softness, love for life and warmth of family in his paintings. WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT OIL PAINTING IN FINE ART?
Although oil is probably one of the most familiar media used, few truly know or understand what is involved in creating an oil painting. It is a process which became popular in the 15th Century, although it had started several centuries earlier. Many different types of oils have been used such as linseed, poppyseed, walnut and safflower oil. Each oil has different properties and drying times, thus producing different results.
The artist will usually begin by sketching the image onto a canvas. The pigmented oil is then applied in layers. Careful application is needed for each layer to prevent cracking or peeling. Various tools can be used to transfer the oils to the painting surface. Although paint brushes are used traditionally, other methods include palette knives or even rags. Since oil paint remains wet longer than many other types of artists’ materials, it allows the artist to makes changes to his work much more easily. Since oil paint dries by oxidation, it usually takes about two weeks to dry to the touch, however, it is not completely dry enough to apply varnish for another six months to a year.

WATERCOLOR IN FINE ART
For the seventh blog on fine art media I will discuss a very well-known, but now rarely used, technique known as watercolor. This method became popular in the United States around the middle of the 19th century.
Watercolor painting is probably one of the most difficult media to use. The paints that are used are water soluble and most commonly applied to some form of paper. While oil or acrylic paints remain on the paper or canvas as they are applied, watercolor will change the absorbency and shape of the paper when it is wet, as well as its appearance as it dries. The difficulty in watercolor painting is almost entirely in learning how to manage the behavior of water. Watercolor paints are not very forgiving, so previous efforts cannot simply be painted over, nor can the paints be simply be scraped off like oil from a canvas. The common procedure is to draw a faint outline of the subject in pencil and then to use very small brushes to paint small areas at a time, allowing adjacent areas to have completely dried.
The difficulty in using watercolor as a fine art medium has caused it to be almost completely abandoned. One artist who is a master of using mixed media, including watercolor, is Brett-Livingstone Strong. His works are truly incredible in using this technique, particularly in Les Fleurs Suite. Unfortunately, the pictures depicted on the screen do not do justice to the actual artworks. Strong manages to make use of watercolor to create images that are beyond realism. He creates images of dew drops and petals that almost allow you to smell the fragrance of the flowers. This Suite consists of four images, all of which are Artist Proofs. They are each double signed by Strong. The bottom of each floral has the image number, the name of the artwork and his signature written in his own handwriting. These florals are an absolute treasure to be enjoyed for a lifetime and beyond.

This blog will describe the seriolithograph. It is the fourth that I have written on the different types of media commonly used in modern fine art. As one might expect, the seriolithograph is a hybrid process which combines two fine art media — the serigraph and the lithograph, previously discussed in earlier blogs.
A seriolithograph is a high-quality reproduction of a piece of art, often an oil painting, run in limited editions. It creates a richly detailed work of art that effectively captures the colors and textures of the original artwork. The seriolithograph is quickly emerging as the ideal technique for superior reproductions of paintings. Using high-quality paper, the process begins with the lithograph, which provides the detailed drawing. Then serigraph screens are created to build color and depth as well as to create the texture specific to the original painting. The process is then completed by applying a high-gloss varnish, adding more depth to the piece.

FINE ART HELIOGRAVURES
This is the fifth in a series of blogs that I have written about the different types of media commonly used in modern fine art. The heliogravure is one of the most highly appreciated techniques, yet probably the rarest used today.
Heliogravure was first invented in the early 19th century and is the oldest procedure for reproducing images. The process involves two distinct steps. First, a complex photochemical procedure is used that creates an intaglio surface. The word intaglio comes from the Italian “to engrave”. It is a figure or design carved into or beneath the surface of hard metal or stone. The image is then fixed and etched upon a specially prepared copper plate which is eventually transferred onto dampened etching paper using special inks. Heliogravures can be very difficult to distinguish from etchings or engravings. In fact, each heliogravure is considered an original, and its value is accordingly assured.
Heliogravure fine art is very highly regarded because of its rich palette of blacks and shades of gray, as well as its breadth of tonal range, which can produce exquisite masterpieces. Yet, this technique has practically disappeared because it is a costly and time-consuming.

FINE ART SERIGRAPHS
Last week I wrote about giclees and lithographs as different types of media used in fine art. If you missed either of these, just go back to last week’s blogs. Another type of media commonly used in modern fine art is the serigraph.
Serigraphy first evolved in the 1900s. A serigraph is sometimes also called a silkscreen. This name has been used because a serigraph is created using a process in which paint is pushed through a fine silk or nylon screen that is tightly stretched across a frame, onto either canvas or fine art paper. Special chemicals are used to block out areas that should not be painted. A different screen is then used for each color represented in the artwork. Often a serigraph comprises hundreds of colors, requiring hundreds of screens. After applying the paint to the screen, the artist uses a squeegee-like tool to pull the paint across the screen, printing the image on the paper or canvas placed beneath.
Serigraphy provides the ability to create a work of art that can closely resemble oils, pastels or watercolors. This process has been used by many famous artists, including Erte, Brett-Livingstone Strong, Edna Hibel and others.

FINE ART LITHOGRAPHY
Earlier this week I began a series to talk about some of the different types of media used in fine art. I began with the term “giclee” which is one of the modern methods used. If you missed that blog, go back just a couple days.
The next type of media which I will discuss is lithography. This method was started in the 20th Century and quickly gained popularity. Lithography is a complicated process which I will try to simplify here. Basically, it is a method of printing using either stone or metal (usually zinc or aluminum). The artist uses special water-resistant litho pens, chalks and brushes to apply melted litho ink to create the image. Chemicals are then used to allow the image to attract the ink where etched and repel it elsewhere. This process must be duplicated for each color requiring a separate stone or metal sheet. Once completed the image may be transferred onto paper which is used to cover the piece.
Many famous artists, including Picasso, Chagall, Matisse and others have used lithography to reproduce their works of art. GICLEE? WHAT IS A GICLEE?
For those of you who love fine art, but are not completely familiar with all the different types of media used in fine art, I have decided to write a series of blogs that describe the some of the methods used. I am starting with the term “giclee” which is a fairly new technique used in fine art and, therefore, unknown to many.
Giclée (pronounced “zhee-clay”) was a term first used by Jack Duganne, a printmaker. He used this neologism to describe the use of ink-jet printing to create images. The word “giclée” is derived from the French language word “gicler” meaning “to squirt, spurt, or spray”. The name was originally applied to fine art prints created on Iris printers in a process invented in the early 1990s but has since come to mean any high quality ink-jet print and is often used in galleries. The earliest giclees were created in the late 1980s.
Professionally-produced inkjet works of art are much more expensive than the offset lithography process which is also used in fine art. WHAT DO OLD WATCH PARTS AND AN ANTIQUE CAR HAVE IN COMMON?
At first blush one might think that, aside from both being old, these two things would have nothing in common. In fact, one might say that the old watch parts might be considered junk, while the antique car might be very valuable and expensive. But what happens if you put the two together?
An old retired watchmaker decided to just that. He utilized his watch parts to create wonderful artwork. He took fob chains, watch faces, and many internal watch mechanisms to create an incredibly classy antique car. He did this without the use of a paintbrush or any other typical media used in art. When a person is about to invest in fine art, several questions come to mind. Would I like to invest in an original oil from one of the old masters (which could cost thousands of dollars), or from a more modern well-known artist? Could I afford a painting from my favorite artist? Would I prefer an original oil painting or a giclee or other style of print? What style of painting is my favorite: traditional, impressionism, expressionism, modern or abstract?
Unless a buyer has been thinking about these questions for some time, (s)he must do research - read books, visit galleries - to decide his preferences, keeping in mind the place it is to be hung and the size needed.

The entrance to your home provides the first opportunity to greet your guests and give them a first impression of your abode. You will want it to be welcoming and friendly. Do you enjoy craft fairs? Do you like not always being able to spend much time in one booth, because of the crowd, or there is so much to see? I know those two things is what keeps me from going to craft fairs. What if there was someplace that you could examine at your leisure and find embroidered items to look at leisurely. Now I know that it isn’t quite the same, if you have a question, you will have to depend on email. But there is a site that you can find lots of different embroidered items, and not one person will be bumping into you.

If you needed to sell your home in this tough economy, what would you have to do to make it appealing to a new home buyer? Every seller asks himself this question.
Some suggestions to consider might be (1) to do any needed repairs, (2) a fresh coat of paint makes the greatest impact for the least cost, (3) look at the space with a fresh eye to try to determine what might interest a potential buyer. For example, does the home have a foyer? If not, create one with a coat rack, a bouquet and a landscape painting.

Wind chimes are beautiful ornaments that can be added to your fully-furnished home. With the inclusion of outdoor chimes, a natural music is produced as the wind naturally hits the metals of the small accessory. The wind is the main ingredient that produces the sound of this device. However, before buying chimes, be wary of a few things.
First, outdoor wind works with the wind. This means that when the wind passes, the individual pieces bump into each other to create music. Therefore, Wind chimes are best used on areas where wind blows from moderate to slightly frequent. Areas where wind barely passes will have no use for wind chimes. Also, chimes
can be helpful when identifying if someone came through the door, as opening it would usually bring in a wisp of air. If this is your purpose, then the chimes should be located near the door that is not frequently raided by wind. If there is always wind blowing in the area, then there would be no distinction whether there is an intruder or whether it was only the wind that triggered the chimes.

Like traditional rubber stamps, clear hobby stamps allow you to create beautiful designs even if you don’t consider yourself artistic. However, have you ever purchased a clear stamp that just didn’t perform right? Recently I decided to try some cute Disney clear stamps purchased from another company and available at the local WalMart. I was very disappointed with the quality of the stamp as well as the image produced. The stamps, though clear were hardly tacky, hard to peel off the carrier and did not produce a clean crisp image. Once I was done with the stamp, it was hard to get it to stick back onto the carrier sheet. To get a decent image I tried rubbing a vinyl eraser over the design. It helped a little, but the ink still was not uniform and evenly placed.

They are soft and pliable and if dirt inhibits the self stick feature, simply wash them in water to restore tackiness. Bonsai is an Artistic expression.
Bonsai is the marriage of both art and horticulture. The bonsai artist never duplicates nature but rather expresses a personal aesthetic through manipulation. If you undertake bonsai as a hobby there are no strict rules to follow, but you gain enjoyment from your unique creation. A bonsai is not a genetically dwarfed plant. Any plant can be a bonsai and in fact, given adequate supply of water, air, light, and nutrients, a properly maintained bonsai should outlive a full size tree of the same species. Your artistic creation can be passed on for generations. The artist’s tools include pruning both branches and roots, wiring the trunk and branches, pinching off new growth, and periodic repotting. The bonsai artist need not take on an expensive commitment; it does require vigilance, patience, and a growing skill. Even if things do not go as planned, don’t give up, a new plan for your artistic creation will come. It is better if you have three or four bonsai at one time so you can experiment with different techniques and styles.

There are a lot a lot of outdoor garden decorations to choose from, but did you know that wind chimes are believed to bring good luck? It’s not a matter of cost and it doesn’t matter if you choose unique Wind chimes or whimsical garden chimes. Their gentle sound creates healing feng shui vibrations in the air and while each element of the wind chime is important, it will be the sight and sound that matters most to you.

Rubber stamping with clear acrylic hobby stamps is addictive. Finding new rubber stamping ideas feeds the desire to create. A new idea for using decorative rubber stamps enhances paper scrapbooking flowers with rubber stamps. One example of an ideal set of stamps for this technique is called Big Blooms which features several different flower shapes and sizes.
Simply choose a darker color of ink to stamp in that complements the paper flower and stamp your smaller flower upon it. To complete the flower embellishment attach it the the desired scrapbook page or card making craft. Try it out. You’ll love it.

I love clear rubber stamps! I love to be able to see right through the stamp, and the acrylic block to where I am stamping. It makes stamping in layers super easy and lots of fun. Because I love clear stamps, I am always watching for fun designs and cute sayings that I can add to my hobby stamp collection. In doing so I have found that not all clear rubber stamps are of a high quality. Purchasing clear rubber stamps that require you to cut the design apart or trim the edges is not a sign of quality. Some stamps stick to their carrier sheet so completely that you feel it will never relinquish its grip. Hobby stampers don’t need stamps that just cause frustration so here are a couple of tips to help you. Buy stamps that cling but don’t bond to the carrier sheet. Choose companies you know or that are known for their quality. One company that sells only quality clear stamps is Clearly Rubber Stamping. Good Morning from LaGrange, IN. Large Wind Chimes with Church Like sound sound delightful to the ears because the wind is the composer of the harmonics or disharmonies that are produced when they are moved. The wind chimes that sound the best are the ones that are based on music, chords and the science of matching musical tones.
You can also buy Large Windchimes that are tuned to different tonal scales. One harmonic scale that is quite common is what is called the pentatonic scale, which is a scale of major notes that was first used in chimes in ancient Greece. You can also fine this type of scale in soprano, tenor, alto and bass versions. Usually the larger the tube is the deeper the sound of the chime will be if it is hit by something.
Yet another interesting tonal scale for Wind Chimes is the Mongolian scale, which consists all of lower tenor notes and bass notes. Although they have very little to do with Christianity they very much like church bells when they strike each other. The important thing to remember about Wind Chimes is that they must be placed somewhere where they will receive a bit of a breeze or they will not make any beautiful music at all.

Rubber stamping, scrapbooking and paper tole are a new and exciting way to create fascinating, three dimensional embellishments for your cards and pages. Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione was born in Genova in 1609. He died in Mantova in 1665.
He was a versatile artist, born and trained in Genova, he was equally at home on an intimate scale and in monumental work. He passionately study the Genovese work of Rubens and Van Dyck. He was the first Italian to disover the etchings of Rembrandt (1630)wich remained an inspiration for the rest of his life. He worked also in Rome and Naple. He invented the monotype technique - a single print made from an unincised copper plate. He returned to Genova and than he was appointed court painter in Mantua were he worked until his death. His etchings, monotype are at the Royal Collection (Windsor)and paintings in various Galleries, including Birmingham. (see Art and Artist)
